Question Checking Tranny Fluid (4RUNNER)

This is going to sound totally stupid, but what's the appropriate way to check the tranny fluid in the 3rd gen 4runners? I checked the manual and no luck. Does the vehicle need to be in park or neutral or etc...?

Also, what happens if it's over filled?

I know this is trivial, but I have not done this yet on this 4runner.

Thanks...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Truck fully warmed up, shift trans thru all gears, leave engine running and read dipstick.

If over filled bad things can happen like excess case pressure from fluid foaming, overflow out of vent tube, blown seals.
