Walked out of my apartment this morning and noticed that on my ARB bumper my PIAA offrod lights were missing kinda made my heart stop.:mad:
Well for future reference I was curious how to keep your lights from not getting stolen? Is there any possible way to lock them up or wire them up to your alarm system so when the get disconnected the alarm will go off?

Just had to tell someone.

On the brighter note: at least the didnt cut the wires, they were kind enough to disconnect from the connectors.

 

sorry to hear about your lights being stolen. look on the bright side (no pun intended), atleast its not hardcore damage. anyway, i think piaa does make something that locks your lights, not sure though. i will try to look it up tonight and post back...

 

alright, found it...its called the piaa A.T.D (anti-theft device) taken from the performance products catolog:

it works in conjunctions with an existing automotve alarm system. in the event of an attempted theft, the auotmotive alarm is triggered. this type of anti-theft device protects adhesive mounted lamps, as well as lamps with a 10 mm stud.

performance products lists it as $32. 95. they might have it on their website here

 

Check out this site. It is the accessories for PIAA lights. On it there is the PTA and there is also just locks for your lights. I think they may be a solution as well. What lights were they? Goodluck! :fireman:

 

Next time try to park your 4Runner in a lot similar to this and you can forget about anybody messing with it

That's a cool pic man!! Sucks to hear about your lights getting swiped. I have worried about that with my Hella's.. Sucks one has to worry about getting your truck stolen let alone you accessories too:rolleyes:

 

Probably the best protection (aside from parking next to police cruisers) is to weld the nut/bolt in place. Doesn't take much, just enough that it can't be turned with a wrench. The alternative is to weld a metal cap over the nut. Those special lock nuts are fairly easy to defeat.

Does your ARB use those stupid little metal plates? Worst design ever security-wise if you ask me.

 

Anybody installed the PIAA ATD? I can't find any data on where it is susposed to tap in to.

 

I've also seen some guys fit Locking Lug nuts onto thier mounting studs...guess that depends on your stud size though...

I took a 1" OD SS rod, cut off a 1" chunk of it, and drilled and tapped it for my stud size, then drilled and tapped 4 small holes in one end of it. Then I took a larger diameter chunk, bored out a 1" dia hole, and drilled 4 clearance holes to match first, and one in center too.. then flattened the edges...

put the two together to put on, then once tightened, undo the 4 small bolts, and drop off the flattened part, leaving a stainless rod behind that is harder to grip... BUT i dont think it would stop anyone with a big pair of channel locks, so its not really worth all the work of making

It's an electronic box that taps into your factory alarm. I'm assuming it also connects to the light power source and if you try to disconnect it the module will set off the vehicles alarm.

I just don't know where is would tap into the security system. It may be in the directions but I don't want to buy it just to read the directions

Oh and nice fab work btw wjwerdna but you're right it probably won't stop the thief but it is a deterrent and in most cases thieves are lazy and will just skip it and go on to the easy snatch.

 

If a theif really wants the lights, they will get them First thing I thought of when I saw the PIAA ATD, is most likely you will know the lights are protected just by looking at them. Just use alligator clips to connect the alarm module wire to ground, then unbolt the lights. Easy to defeat system

 

If you want them to stay on the truck just fire up the MIG. I tacked the bolts on the winch of my 40 it not going any ware with out a grinder.
