I may have posted a pic here in the past on a project that Downey is working on for the front of IFS rigs.

It will eliminate the torsion bars up front, and provide over 13" of travel.

Not sure of the cost, but this might be a good alternative to spending 3 to $4K on a SAS job.

For that kind of money, I can buy a nice '85 truck or 4Runner already with a solid axle.

With Porsche inner CVs, coilovers, fancy custom A-arms and steering rods it WON'T be at all affordable. A pair of those probably cost more than my whole truck with mods. SAS is still the way to go for lift and wheel travel without breaking the kids college funds.

Lifting front wheels is fun and makes for good pictures.

 

i thought that they had it available already. i asked how much the long travel IFS kit would be and they said just under $1000.
maybe i was mistaken?

 

Well I haven't done a lot of research on this because it really dosen't intrest me.

How much do the Tacoma and 3rd Generation 4Runner guys pay for SAW coilovers? How much do the ATS A-Arm guys pay for just upper arms? How much are the lower A-Arms? The steering? How much are Porsche Lubro joints and axle shafts?

What about Balljoints vs. Uniballs. Stock balljoints would probably die pretty fast with that, if they will even work at all.

And then there is installation.... Add it all up, its a ton of money Way more than $1000 They will probably sell some lesser kit for $1000. It would probably be like a Pro Comp 4" kit with different bumpstops. :rolleyes:

The mere fact that they don't disclose the price really makes me wonder. Sure its an ideal setup for IFS. You have to pay to play. I think its a deeper money pit than we are already in. It looks like yet another magic carpet/ pipe dream to me. A good junkyard '85 axle w/ leaf springs and some internet research + some tools = more flex for way less money.

Its not at all for me. Its a Pro desert racer type thing IMO.

That's way nice. Probably pricey, Downey's proud of their stuff. I like dealing with them though, everyone I've dealt with were friendly and knowledgeable.

 

Its definately something I want and last I spoke to them they indicated it may be finished around late January but there maybe more testing involved.

But I agree I think the US cost from my end will be a killer so I'm hoping I can perhaps purchase basic parts such as A frames and I will do the rest myself. For instance, I would want to fit coilovers to my Rancho 9000's to keep the adjustability.

Got a few other projects on the go at the moment though, LOL.

What is the cost of an SAS for a 2nd gen? Got any good figures?

I have never priced an SAS for a 2nd gen, but when it comes to 3rd gens it is definately not cheap. Many people have come to some conclusion that it can all be said and done for under $4000.00, but after some careful consideration and lots of feedback I'm thinking that figure is way too low and to SAS a 3rd gen we are talking at least $7000 to have it done right.

Sure you may be able to buy all the pieces for around $4k, but the work involved and bugs to be worked out is gonna cost a lot more than just the parts. Although a long travel kit will not beat out an SAS vehicle, IMO it has a lot of good points. Mainly it is cheaper in the long run, most everything involved is bolt on and this makes it totally reversable if you ever decide to sell your vehicle, where as if you torch that IFS off, your resale value is NIL in most situations so you better plan on keeping it or selling it to a hardcore wheeler who can appreciate it.

That is only my take on the 3rd gen perspective, I can't speak for a 2nd gen but I think it will be very interesting to see the Downey kit when it is done.
