Is my master cylinder going out?

Today while coming to a stop I was applying constant pressure to the pedal then all of a sudden it went to the floor with a pop sound. A little scary. This has happened about 4 times in the last 2 days. I have been getting a single pop sound coming from the vicinity of the driver's side front wheel every time I apply the brakes with reasonable pressure. At first I thought it might be my cv, it has a little play in it. I always thought clicking around turns was the sign of a bad cv. I have none of that, just a single pop when applying the brakes. I checked the caliper and made sure it was tight. Perhaps the popping noise is coming from the master cylinder.(?) I have no experience with master cylinders, but I can't think of what else might make my pedal go to the floor like that. I feel like it's dangerous to drive it right now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If your pedal is sinking to the floor while at a stop with you foot on it, then my guess would be your master cylinder.

Does the popping sound have anything to do with it, or is it an entirely different problem? I've called around and I can get a remanufactured master cylinder for a hell of a lot cheaper than a new one. Do you guys think it would be ok to go the the reman. one to save some $ or would I just be asking for future problems?

You might want to check your brake lines. I have this old golf cart with hydraulic brakes and it does the same thing, only brake fluid sprays out from a small hole in the brake line near the battery compartment. Check for fluid near the brake pedal. That would indicate that it is definitely your master cylinder.

you shouldnt have any difficulties with a reman, i replaced 2 on my old 86 runner over the 6 yrs i owned it. clean around the master cylinder before you start ripping the old one out, you wont get any thing getting caught in the open lines while swapping them. take your time, make sure everything is tight, bleed the brakes, top up the reservoir and you should be good to go. 1 - 1 1/2 banana job.

Thanks Lee. I just ordered the reman. from Kragen for 64 bucks and it comes with a lifetime warranty. Sweeeet. Beats the hell out of the $275+ the stealer wants for it. Could the brake booster have anything to do with the problems I've described?

if the brake booster was going out the brake pedal would be very firm at times, just like if you have the engine off and pump the brakes, the pedal will get harder to push because you don't have anymore vacuum to assist

I just put a reman on mine, and the pedal is getting worse and worse.

I think there is something wrong with it.
