AFTERMARKET EXHAUST....NewB Q

I just bought a '94 PU 4X4 Ext Cab V6 (ok, now I know I should have gone for the 4 banger...whoops ). Anyway now I want to build a kick @$$ rig (mainly to keep up with my buddy's Rubicon), but I have 2 problems:

1. I know very little about cars
2. I am on a budget

I need to replace the exhaust (cat back), so I figured this would be a great opportunity to put in a high performance one. Unfortunatly I have only found 3 companies that sell a ready to go exhaust for my truck:

Jardine
http://www.performanceproducts.com/P...producttype=20

Downey
http://www.downeyoff-road.com/Engine...xhaustSys.html

LC Engineering
http://www.lcengineering.com/HeadersExhaust.htm

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Splitz

You can just buy a muffler and have it welded into the existing pipe. It will be cheaper that way. I went with a Dynomax Super Turbo. It has a decent tone to it. You can definitely hear it. It ships for about $50 from Summit Racing and install is usually about $20. Some people have put on a Magnaflow but those are a little more pricey. Search and you shall find.

Also Corey has soundbytes on his webpage of different exhausts.

I have to replace my existing pipes, but I may not spend the extra $$ on mandrel bent pipes and just get a good muffler.

Not necessarily. If you plan on wheelin it, then I would go with 2.25. If you want more top-end on road performance go 2.5". Most of the charts say to keep a 3.0 sized motor at 2.25" for best results. The .25" difference is not going to be substantial really, it just might move your power curve a little bit.

Thanks! So for off roading do you think an aftermarket exhaust is even worth it?

Well most of us don't do hardcore stuff, which is where you really need the TQ down low. So, go for it. Aftermarket exhaust will add some HP, and it sounds great IMO. You will be fine with 2.25" is all I am saying. Have you seen Corey's exhaust clips page?

Look up "Corey" in the members section, then go to his website. You will find a page with a bunch of exhaust comparison's.

Corey's site is cool, its got alot of sound bytes, but I'm looking for performance! Unfortunatly it does not seem like anyone has any opinon on one exhaust system over another. I am looking for the TQ down low, so maybe the 2 1/2" isn't worth the extra money. What about a free flow cat? Are they worth it?

I've heard free flow cats coupled with an aftermarket exhaust kills backpressure and performance. Hope the downey works well for you

Unless its illegal, dumps in the wrong spot thus leaking into the cabin, and is way too large that it cripples performance as opposed to helping.

Plays - I should have got the 4 banger just becuase it is easier and cheaper to find parts, and probably a little easier to work on. As far as the free flow cat & back pressure, I dont know. I've been told I may loose some low end torque...which sucks, but we'll see.

Actually, silver asked why... But the 4bangers are so low on power, decent mileage, but regearing is so incredibly necessary for tires larger than 31" unless you never plan to drive around town or try to merge on the highway
