Ive got an 83 pickup with the 22r motor. It looks to me like the ignition coil is just a regular coil that could be replaced with any high performance coil such as the one i have on my sbc motor. Has anyone tried anything similar to this?

Any other easy hop up tricks anyone has found for these motors? thanks.

 

If it looks like a regular coil, go ahead and replace it. Chances are in 21 years, the resistanced in your coil has increased. My 95 is one of the Toy rectangular units with special connectors and seems to still be doing what it ought to be doing.

 

As far as I know, yes you can swap them out. I've got an '89 22re and the coil looks like that standard coil. I'm going to replace mine with the MSD high vibration coil.

 

i have one of the rectangular/squarish units that actually looks like a transformer found in dc operated dvices that plug into ac power.. can i replace this unit with an aftermarket one for better performance? is it not even worth it? i want just a tad better performance and a tad more reliability, but i dont even know if a new coil/igniter is available?

 

if it is a 22r the answer is most likely NO aftermarket one... my igniter just went out on me... the coil and igniter are seperate units that work together.. i saw a part at the parts store for the toyota and it was a regular type coil, and also in my fsm, but that was on differnt models.. noot the 22r

 

My brother put an Accel super coil on his 2wd 92 truck and it works fine but it is a 22re

 

not sure if this is still active... but on my 85 22r, there is no coil.. only an igniter with internal coil.....

 

hmm, i always thought the 22R had an igniter box and a coil seperately

you can always go the MSD route, a lot of people do that and it works fine. the toyota ignition isn't a bad one at all but neither is MSD

 

sort of getting off track here from the ignition thing, but do you have a lift on your truck. the reason i ask is i want to go to 31x10.50's and wonder if i will have sufficent space to do this. i put a tire up there and it looks like it would clear, maybe im just having wishful thinking. i want to keep my truck pretty much stock height because it is my daily driver and rarely sees offroad action nowadays.

 

no suspension lift here, my tires are 31x11.50s and they fit fine with room to spare! actually they measure out to be about the size of a 32" bfg. i could probably fit 33s with some rubbing on the stock suspension. my avatar shows my old NR78 buckshots which measured out at a little over 30"

1st gen trucks have a lot of room for tires, 31s are no big deal at all

is there much power depreciation with the 31s that you noticed. looks like we have the same rust spots on our beds. looking at your pics 31s look good with no lift. i am sold. thanks

 

not a lot less power that with the 235s(approx. 28.5") but it doesn't like to go much over 55mph. however i think that's more of an engine problem, mine has 315,000 miles and goes through a quart of oil ever 500 miles. i'd be fine if i'd hurry up and get the new motor built...
