if anyone knows how to get rid of the ugly toyota stripes on the side of my truck help me out! i was thinking maybe heating them with something but i dont know what or how i could do that without harming the paint.

 

Ok, I've done this on my 89 pickup and my 91 4runner. What you want to do is heat it with a hair dryer, grab, and peel. Easy as that ha ha ha.... It takes a really long time becase you have to heat as you go. After that, the real problem is getting all the glue off. I used a special chemical made for it at an auto paint suply store. You just rub it on with a rag untill the stuff balls up and comes off.

That is what I did with the HUGE 89 stripe. For the little aftermarket pinstripe tape on the 4runner, I got this wheel from the same paint place that is like a hard pencil erasor and runs off a drill. Just spin away and the stripe peals off glue and all. This is the easyest option for samaller stripes such as the stock 4runner stipe. It won't be quite as gentle to the paint as the previous option and you will probably have to buff out some scuffs but nothing major. I wish more people did this because I think it really improves the apperance! Doesn't look cheesy like some of the stock stripes. Anyway, go to a auto paint suply store and they will fix you up. Souldn't cost more than $30!

 

thanks for the info, ill definitely be workin on that this weekend. i think im gonna go with the first method as i have an '84 i just got with a big ol stripe. luckily my 93 p/u has nice paint with no stripe. thanks again!

 

O man, on the 84 I don't think the first method will work so well. The stripe witll be so baked on and so hard it prabably won't peal off in one piece. In your case I would go for the wheel. You might need two of um but that's what the profesionals use anyway.

 

Yes, the wheel is great. I have used them, and they come right off, if you do it right. Your hand might cramp, though.

 

How's the paint difference ( fading ) after removing the stripes ? I just bought a '90 Runner and want to remove my stripes also.

p.s. , are these things really this slow (3.0 ) say it aint so !

Here's what I did when I had my 92 PU. I had been out on the trail all day and the truck was pretty muddy, so I decide to take the truck to one of those do it yourself carwash places. Well, you may have already guessed it, but I used the pressure hose there on it and it shot half of my stripe right off. So by this point I was like "well half of it's already gone, might as well take care of all of it" so I wiped off the rest of the stripe with the pressure hose, then all I had to do was get the glue off, which took forever, then a good coat of wax and I had a new truck. It was funny because not even a week before this happened I was thinking of how nice my truck would look without those stupid stripes, and then... :pat:

I used to work in a sign shop and if you can find a citrus based cleaner that will get the glue off also you might stop by a sign shop that does vinyl and tell them you wnat to get the stuff off they might sellyou some of the stuff...sorry forget the name of it though. It's been a while.

 

If your 84 is anything like my 87, some of the striping will come off with heating and such, but the clearcoated parts of the stripe might be completely baked into the paint. I literally can not get some parts of my stripe out unless I want the bare metal coming through.

For paint fade, my truck was real bad. But the previous owner never garaged it. The paint under the stickers was brand new, the other paint was way old and faded. But you can't really tell unless you wipe the dirt away.
