Battery and Brake Light Anomoly

SHi Folks

I have an 86 Toyota 4WD SR5 EFI Truck 22RE
Normally when you get a Battery and Brake Light on means that there is a battery or Alternator issue.
I checked my battery at cold and it registers 12.3 volts. When running, the battery is charging at 14.3 volts. I let the truck sit for 3 days and checked for battery drain and it still shows 12.3 volts.
Both Battery and Alternator seem to be fine.
This is the second time in 12 months that I have had these two lights come on and the second time they cleared by themselves.

Does anyone have any advice on what may be the cause?
I have no other issues with electrical right now with the truck

Thanks
Jim

Sometimes when the alternator brushes grow short there can be intermittent charging issues that might light these lights.

Yeah this sounds like good place to start.

Is it difficult to check the brushes on the alternator. I assume I have to remove it and then find replacement brushes if I can

Thanks

Yes, the alternator will need to be removed for inspection
Brush cassettes for these Denso alternators are relatively inexpensive and easily sourced/

If you have the original still installed and determine it needs brushes I would recommend sourcing the brushes which as said above are available. Mine was long gone when I got my truck and I’m on my second reman since, so the third reman total keep the original!!!

Hi Discombobulated
Alternator is my 3rd, I believe. 10 years old.
Got it on Amazon. Was thinking about replacing it and not just the brushes. 10 years is pretty old so now I am wondering if other parts in it will fail

Well that stinks, I’ve been disgusted with the failure rate of reman parts and so is my mechanic friend. Problem is if you give people the choice between a reman and OE it’s BIG BIG difference in price. The other issue is a lot of OE parts for our trucks are long discontinued so we have no choice anyhoo hope you get it sorted out

Hi Samson....,
I have been happy with reconditioned OEM with Toyota Warranty parts from these three sources:
McGeorge Toyota (new name Ourisman Toyota)
Lakeland Toyota, and
Toyota Parts Deal
First two are dealerships with online parts store.
I had bought a starter, an alternator, and power steering gearbox among other things from them. Just compare prices and availability each time.

Oops..
I was incorrect in my years for the alternator. It is true i did buy a rem Denso from Amazon 10 years ago. But I purchased another Rem from Toyota of which a mechanic put in at the time. I will have to look at my logs when that was
I have purchased parts from some of those dealers you listed. I am mainly buying parts from RockAuto, Toyota Monster, Toyota Parts Deal, etc. Where ever the cheapest on the internet is.

Check the ground wire from the head to the firewall. I had an issue where the brake and charge light would light up, and the charge fuse would blow. Your's isn't blowing but ground might be a bad connection. I didn't find anything wrong with alternator or battery. The blown fuse happened a few times then stopped. Sometime later I found that ground wire broken.
