93 Pickup 22RE starter click even after Relay retro-fit
Hey guys and gals,
Recently had my 22RE rebuilt and got it to initially start, but now the starter (I think) is giving me issues.
All I'm hearing is clicks from the solenoid when installed, but the starter will spin up when outside the truck connected straight to the battery with jumpers.
Battery has charge, wires and grounds are good to my knowledge.
I've followed the relay retro fit guide from This Post but I just wired up another OEM relay instead of the BOSCH 30AMP that the guide calls for, could this be an issue?
Totally stumped, just yesterday it was firing, the starter was working and everything seemed fine apart from needing to tweak the timing. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the contacts and plunger inside the starter?
Have you checked for voltage drop at the battery to starter post?
Have you tried to spin the engine by hand to make sure a cylinder isn't hydrolocked with gas or coolant?

Not great w/ a multimeter so unsure how to check for voltage drop, can try to give that a go though.
Engine spins by hand.

How?
To check the solenoid, you just put battery voltage on the solenoid lead. The most-reliable but harder way to do this is referenced in the link you provided. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52367443
You should have a factory starter relay, so the easier way to check the solenoid is through the relay socket: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...switch-287859/
Obviously, this requires a charged battery. This will be close to 12.6v (temperature dependent). If a charged battery hooked to the solenoid tab just produces a click, then the contacts are not good.

Weak battery will cause the same problem. Check the battery voltage after it sits all night. Also, some starters can pass the machine test, but still be bad.
When it's clicking, jump the battery, and see if it cranks right up.

Welp somehow froze up the brand new rebuild so this thread is kinda pointless now since the starter is currently irrelevant. Guess I'm gonna pull the engine... Thanks for the help though ya'll

Nothing I can find online with a similar problem. Guy who built the long block is a pro but I guess he could've messed something up? It's pretty strange.

Yeah took the plugs out before trying :/ I read maybe taking the dist and starter and belt off might help, but I don't see that being the case. I'll try that tomorrow before I get into it I guess.
