1994 4x4 pickup automatic transmission slipping? Speed sensor?

Hi all..

Today is the first time something potentially scary happened with my truck. Ironically, we are supposed to be headed into Canyonlands, The Maze, next week, so this is a double whammy.
This truck has 184k miles on it. Well maintained, always reliable.
3VZE extended cab.
This morning, frosty and cold, I think the transmission was slipping. The speedometer would drop out, and any acceleration stopped, like it was in neutral. The motor is fine, it purrs. Driving along, maybe within 3-10 minutes after starting from cold, there was this slipping feeling, like the motor was disengaged from the drive. I drove it throughout the day and this never happened again.

The ATF level is between the 'hot' and 'cold' locations on the dipstick. The speedometer has been dropping out sometimes for the past year or two, but never losing acceleration. Today when it dropped out, motor was fine, but it felt like it was in neutral.

I could not duplicate this today, not even once more.

Any thoughts on this? Is this the very first sign of a problem presenting?

I am going to try to see if this happens again, every day. I really do not want to take this on a trip and get stuck out on the Flint Trail, or anywhere else for that matter.

Could this just be a glitch in the Matrix?

Thanks for a great forum.

check for codes: http://web.archive.org/web/201408161...31diagnosi.pdf (not always helpful, but easy, so why not?)

The speedometer "drop out" is a sign of a failing speed sender. While cleaning them can sometimes help, the replacements are less than $50.
