I have scoured the internet trying to find a proper answer to my question and I can't seem to get a definite answer.

I have an 87 Toyota Pickup with the 22R engine. I keep blowing the AM2 30Amp fuse - Which as far as I can read is the Ignition switch fuse?

Anyways, I am trying to find a clear answer on exactly what this amp powers and hopefully see if someone has a wiring diagram for the 87 with a 22r and any tips on how to find shorts as easily as possible

Welcome to the forum.
A problem well-stated is a problem solved. Exactly when does it blow? As soon as you put it in? As soon as you turn IGN on?
Does anything else blow? EFI fuse? (behind left side kick panel).
Also inspect Black wire with red stripe from fuse to fuel injector resistor module - the aluminum box with heat sink on inner fender near starter relay.

Got a multi-meter? If not, Beijing Freight is your friend Then, we'll go from there.

 

Just curious. What is the unit with the cooling fins located right next to the starter relay? Thanks

Hi, Thank you very much for the reply and you're right. So as far as I can tell it blows when I actually turn the ignition over and crank the engine which obviously leads me to believe that there's a short between the ignition switch and the AM2 fuse.

This is the 22r engine, not the 22r-e.

I can't seem to find schematics for the 22r, only the r-e. All of the links that I have tracked down all seem to be years old and broken.

I am just trying to find out exactly which wires ill need to check if possible. I've never had to deal with any electrical issues thus far with the vehicles I have owned and put off learning it for awhile but now I have no choice.

Also, no, nothing else blows, just the AM2 fuse as far as I can tell - the 15A ignition fuse is still intact inside the cab and the rest of the fuses in the engine compartment are intact and I have checked them with my multimeter.

 

Didn't see any mention of that unit in anything above. I did find out it's the resistor solenoid relay next to the starter relay. Thanks for the help
