Aloha guys so I finally traced down the fuel smell in my 94 t4r. I looked at all the lines with a camera and everything looks good but today when filling up I could see gas leaking out of the filler.
The filler neck at the gas tank door is leaking somewhere by the frame. I had seen a stain but never liquid until today when I watched while filling up. Since it’s leaking I know it’s not sealing vacuum like it should so part of the system is out of wack. It’s venting fumes there instead of them ending up in the charcoal canister or burned off. It may be related to the pinging and possibly the idle.
I’ll report back when I get it swapped.
Regardless it’s dangerous and I gotta get on it 😬
Actually I’m wondering if it’s the filler or just the hoses.
I wondered if anyone on here has changed there’s and if they have any tips?
I’ll probably get the filler and rubber hoses and just return anything I don’t need.
When I changed every fuel hose in my 92 22RE 4x4, the only one that I could not find available was the filler hose. 2WD OEM was still available, but nothing for 4WD.
Maybe your leak is where the filler hose clamps onto the metal neck and not the hose itself? Or the vent hose is leaking at the filler neck when fuel is being pumped in? Or metal filler neck has developed a hole?
Once the plastic fender inner liner is off, everything is easily accessible.

cool thank you brotha!
ya i think it’s at the connection between the filler neck and one of the hoses. It’s really hard to find the filler hose and vent hose online. I think i found one 4wd filler but no neck yet. Spent an hour plus yesterday and still not sure I’ve got the right parts.
I want to just get all the rubber hoses and a filler neck. I think my metal neck is fine but that way when I’m in there if it does have a hole i can swap it. The rubber if one is going bad I’m sure the others will be on the way and doing all the work to get at it and get it out I might as well replace them while in there.
I’m wondering if it’s possible to just get a length of rubber fuel hose at the right diameter’s from the parts store and cut to fit?
Shoots! Looks like they've discontinued these hoses. Kinda a bummer, there's so many of these trucks on the road still especially here in hawaii.
Here's what I found for parts numbers from Toyota
Filler Hose (goes below the metal filler tube) 77213-35230
Fuel Hose (Second smaller fuel hose from metal filler to tank) 77408-35040
Filler Neck (Metal tube that connects to fuel door and to rubber hoses into tank) 77201-35370
It kinda sucks, but it looks like I'm going to have to pull it apart and measure and get some standard fuel hose of the closest diameter. I guess it will probably work out cheaper that way though.
I searched for a universal filler hose but the diameter is not the same at each end in our trucks so a universal one would not be an great fit at one end. As far as the vent hose that goes from the tank to the filler neck, I used this hose from Amazon which also was the perfect hose to replace the low pressure side of my power steering pump. However, it was a pretty tight fit for the vent hose:
This is getting confusing haha. I've found a couple hoses that one Toyota online dealer says fits my truck, but if I check on other sites it says it doesn't.... It says it's for the pickup. But I'm wondering how different that would be? I think the pickup filler is much shorter?
Another one I found says it's for the hilux surf which I know is basically the same truck. I'm wondering if it matters if it's for diesel vs. gas? I would think if it's for a diesel then gas would be ok?
my problem now is how to change them. Preferably without dropping the tank…
theres very little room to work/reach down to where they fit onto the tank let alone adjust a hose clamp. Sadly they did away with the access hatch that the earlier models had under the seat

Many years ago I discovered a similar problem on my '91 T4R (owned since new). Long story short, these 2nd gen vehicles seem to collect a ton of road dirt up in the channel where the filler neck runs from the side of the truck down to the tank.
My '91 never saw any serious off-road use but still managed to pack this area full of mud and fine gravel that probably saturated every time it rained (which is a lot up here in BC) eventually resulting in a rusted out filler pipe. I ended up pulling the fuel tank to open up the area and pressure washing that whole channel, followed by rust paint and lots of rust inhibiter. Replaced the filler pipe and any questionable hoses, if I recall correctly. No problems since but I do hose that area out whenever I do a major clean.
Thanks guys it does look like I'll be having to drop the tank. Access to the top of the tank where those filler and vent tubes connect is pretty much impossible without dropping. I'm gonna order a gasket that goes under the connector for those hoses to the tank just in case and because it's literally $4
I'm struggling to find the rubber hoses that go from the tank to the hard lines that go up to the motor. They're not listed under fuel system components surprisingly. I guess I can just get some fuel tubing from a parts store that will be close enough once I've dropped the tank and I can pull those guys off.
Well parts are on order. I popped the cover under wheel well yesterday when I filled up. Found the filler hose has a small pinhole just above the bendy section. Small enough to miss by eye, but big enough that quite a bit of gas comes bubbling out and down the frame. This explains the fumes I'm getting when it's sitting or more specifically when it's hot/been running, and the fumes in tank expand and come out of this pinhole instead of getting drawn up to the charcoal canister.
Not totally stoked on having to drop the tank, but hey, she needs some love and am happy to get it fixed
I went ahead and got the filler tube, vent hose, and two rubber gaskets that go between the tank and the fitting the hoses press over. I figure while down there better to put fresh rubber wherever needed. There's a shot of the parts and pricing at the bottom of this message for anyone interested
If anyone in the USA is looking for these parts for their 2nd gen 4x4 4cyl. there's two Toyota dealer's in Florida that I found them on both links below.
Well scratch that. Big bummer. They emailed me saying that the parts are discontinued….. obviously every other dealer’s site says that. Just thought they had some left in stock.
well I’m back to square one trying to find a replacement filler. Really don’t want to drop the tank to install one off a salvage truck and end up with the same problem.
for now I plugged the pinhole in the neck with rtv and smeared a nice glob around the whole area. I doubt it will last a few fillups, but it’s stopped the fumes leaking out and maybe will work for a bit.
the hunt continues.
i just gotta think there’s a pile of these filler tubes in a warehouse somewhere lol. What do guys doing full restorations do?
Unless you've done so in the last 5 yrs or so, JUST DROP THE TANK. This is general advice for anyone not sure about dropping the tank.
You'd have a nice access panel in a 4runner, and you could look in there and decide if it looks bad enough to justify dropping the tank.
No such luck on the trucks. Just imagine what your sending unit, pump,, and tank look like...
I'd pull it and address any issues, then pull that hose out and bring it with in your search.
Worst case scenario is it's immaculate and all you get is piece of mind and an answer for the nest guy that sez just drop it. This was the connector style pump after sitting in my tank for 5 yrs. O'Reilly's included the connector. The tank had to be pulled and the rust removed from sitting g so long I used Evaporust. Drilled out the rivets and rewired. I'm currently replacing the wires with soldered ones.
