I was bored and felt like tinkering with my 4runner and since i live in an apartment complex down here at school there isn't a whole lot that i can do so i figured that i would get this out of the way. My school is in a real small town with an incredibly inept toyota dealership that is made even worse by the fact that they are temporarily in an old pontiac dealership waiting for there new lot to be built. So getting the Toyota Union was out of the question so i hit up autozone and figured that i would take a shot and see if they had the union since it is a pretty generic part. They let me go through all of their unions and i was able to find one that i thought might work. So i bought it and 5" of 1/4 fuel line and 4 small hose clamps, total $9.23 after taxes!

The Union is close, apparently it is likely a standard thread, comparing the two side by side you can't tell a different in the threading. I screwed it in and could get it started easily by hand and then used a deep well socket to screw it in, was a tight fit but never really posed any threat to make me think that it was cutting new thread or was cross threading. I would unscrew after every little bit to check the condition of the thread and the finish on the brass piece, everything looked ok. So i went ahead and stuck it in there and tightened it down about as far as the original breather was.

part #323310 $1.99, i don't mind this on my truck (i wanted to get it done, it was close enough not to get new threads or damage and threads and cheaper/available) i don't recommend this in an area where you will be regularly removing and reinserting the screw but for this are i think it is fine. So if you are in my situation and don't want to wait for a part or have an inept toyota dealership you may want to try this.



*Note, i am not new to working on cars or machines, and realize exactly what i was doing and dealing with, if you aren't comfortable don't do it! just trying to cover my tail.

 

Coulda shoulda bought the Autometer guage adapter pack. In there is the proper M10-1.0 × 1/8"NPT adapter. You're right theough, the two threads are damn close and if you use a brass nipple, it will rethread itself quite nicely.

 

i didn't even think of it, i just tried this out cause i was bored and the fiance was taking a nap. Good idea though!

 

Outa curiosity how much is that autometer pack. I don’t want to goto the Toyota stealership around here after calling them yesterday and them wanting about 60$ for a whip antenna. They would probably want 40$ just for one adapter. Not to mention saving me about 2 hours of driving, one to order, one to pick it up.

 

Dunno offhand. It's been quite while since I did mine. Undoubtedly not as cheap as buying a nipple from your local Toyota or Nissan dealer though.

edit- Ay caramba! I just checked Summit Racing for the adapter. Autometer p/n 2265 is currently going for $10.88. Kinda insane if you ask me. I know I didn't pay that much for mine, maybe for both but not just one.

 

how about for the second gen? are they the same? does summit have a site?

 

I don't remember where I bought my ext. diff breather parts but I did it over the internet at either one of the vendors from the YT vendor section or from Todd (TOR).

I do remember the parts being less than $3 all together

 

Yeah thats another thing I would probably call toyota world for. They seem to be pretty good to me the past couple times I've ordered from them. Side note, I was up at autozone from about 12am till about 5am this morning ended up finding a antenna mast that looks just like the whip antenna that toyota sells for 50-60$, put it on up there, it only cost me 10$. Man it seems I get alota stuff done in the autozone parking lot: new antenna & got my stripped lock lugs off. Had to tow a turbo talon to his house though.

 

less than $3 ??!? i bought mine from Todd and it's costing me $20!!

 

I bought my parts at the local stealer and it wasn't more than $8.

well, guess i'm a stoooopid.

 

I go to salvage yards and I just get the unions off of blown engines intakes there on 4 and 6 cylinder engines that are still in the wreaked toyota's while I was there and the Breather Plug (part #90930-03136) I got them new from the stealership....

Someone mentioned antenna, Auto Zone sells a aftermarket antenna for toyota trucks made like the factory one for 14 bucks, works great and installs just like factory antenna. I had to order and prepay, no biggie!!!!

 

I use an inexpensive brass hose nipple or pipe fitting on mine, I think they cost well under $2.00:
