Check Engine warning light!!

1997 4runner limited V6, 88,000 miles: Check Engine warning light just came on. I check the gas cap, even put in new full tank. Light still on. Any suggestions before I must go to the dealership.... Could it be any number of sensors? Need Help.

Try a local Auto Zone, they can pull the code for free.

Quite often it is the Oxygen sensor. If so, it is ok to drive to the dealer or home to repair.

TDiddy, did you get your double-cab??

Cool - the house is a much better investment, but the 'mods' aren't near as fun

Yeah I second the O2 sensor. 9 times out of 10 that's what it is.

I had an O2 sensor go out on my '98 at around that same mileage.

It's okay to drive with a check engine light on. A lot of people put the majority of the vehicle's miles on it with this light on (of course this doesn't apply to toyota owners).
