Diagnostic port not working, need to set timing.

Diagnostic port does not drop idle when I jump the two terminals. I then took off a vacume line and couldn't get timing marks to line up. I tried pulling a spark plug wire and could not get marks to line up. Truck runs well so I don't think my chain is off any teeth. How can I set my timing without jumping terminals?
the reason for this may be that I swapped a 92 motor in an 1989, both were 22re. I have a few couplers that I can't seem to find hook ups to?

If jumping the diagnostic box does not drop your idle down and return you to base timing, you need to fix that before being able to time it correctly I believe. Your TPS could be out of adjustment.

Not to nit pick, but no OBD2 until 1996

Idle speed too high and/or faulty TPS or TPS adjustment can prevent the jumper from getting to base timing.

Sorry about the obd2 thing. One other thing to note is my check engine light doesn't work or the 4wd light on the dash. At one time someone had the dash out and didn't do a very good job. As far as the TPS goes I'll get out a volt meter and test it in a few days. I looked up how to do it. I will first need to get a fuse for my meter thanks for your responses. I was hoping to be able to lower rpms without fixing the diagnostic hook up at the moment.

Could it be that I swapped motors and something is different on the 89 vs the 92 motor that went in?

The lowering of the revs when the jumper is placed is the effect of the ECU reverting to base timing. The idle speed changes because the jumper has caused the ignition timing to change.

Base timing ought to be 5 or 6 degrees before TDC and when the jumper is removed, the ECU will automaticly advance timing to 12-14 before TDC.

The natural effect of this advance is to increase idle speed slightly.

So I was looking through forums and I found a post from a fellow who was able to jump a terminal
on the ECU and do the same thing. He said T terminal to ground has anyone heard of that. I'm not trying to be stubborn and I realize I need to fix the port but I've put so much time In this truck as of late and I need to work on other stuff. I've done the chain, clutch, all manner of seals, repaired fuel lines ect. My reverse lights have not worked and I'm considering a new wire harness, later just not now.

At this point, you are jumping to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the port, when you have not established that that is the fact.
