Installing timing chain--cant line up marks

I have a 90 toyota pickup with a 22re engine and I have tried just about everything from every angle to line up the timing marks but they are always off..is there a secret special way to line up these marks???Even tried it with the old timing chain, still no luck

p.s. tried the haynes manual way still doesnt line up just right, is it ok if its a little off??

What stage are you in the job?

Did you have the engine at TDC before you took off the old chain? Do you have any photos?

Note that true TDC is not just when you cam "dot" is at 12:00 - you may need to rotate the crank a few times to get it at true TDC (stick a long screwdriver into the #1 spark plug hole and you will touch the top of the first cylinder if you're at TDC).

Give us some more information so we can help Photos are great.....

Well, when you took the old one off was it a pain? doesnt make sense that the old one wont even go on now. Make sure you got the same chains(count the links) and keep playing around with it.

i would love to put some photos on but gotta go to work..so i will post the pics tommorow, here is the best description i can give at the moment..crankshaft is dead on tdc..but when i check out the camshaft it is off by half a tooth counterclockwise, no matter what i do...Ive rotated it clockwise five times..tried to set it back a tooth on both the cam and crank sprockets...ive done what this FREEKING haynes manual said which has a lot of grey area left out, it mainly has the basic stuff like remove and replace..lol...but still same ole stuff nothing lines up perfect..starting to wonder if crankshaft is bent..but never heard of that happening, so im at my wits end

there is a hole in the distributor drive gear that you can insert a "punch" tool into (I used an allen wrench at the time...) and use that to jimmy the cam sprocket back and forth to get the sprocket on the camshaft (assuming the chain is already on both the crank and cam gears).

Assuming you also lined up the "dots" with the "bright links" on both cam and crank shaft?

Have you gone through these 2 great DIYs?

Might want to check to make sure they gave you the right chain there are 2 different ones. The first one is from an early block 22r, they changed block height sometime maybe 85 and it will fit .......I think...or maybe it if you put a old head on a new block its a tooth off....anyway might just give it a quick call to the parts store to be sure

I though the early 22r's had a double chain? Hmmm......

Some people have found their crank pulley was off....the keyway being bent, damaged, or something like that. I've never run into that problem myself, but Kyle99 that used to post a lot on here, actually had the wrong pulley on his motor. Threw him way off for a long time trying to figure that one out.

I lined it all up and i figured there isnt much else to do, did it several ways...the reason im on doing this is that the timing jumped or the computer is screwing up somehow, so i took it apart put it back together and still i have to retard the hell out of the timing for it to run right, this is the third time i took it apart..just want to make sure im doing this right this time..ive done this a couple of times on my other yotas without a problem. This is totally different, for some reason the timing is always off or something is wrong which i suspect the head was milled so much that the timing doesnt line up because the clearances have changed..so im stumped

Hows your oil pressure and your tensioner. I have bought numerous toyotas that have some wear and they run them low on oil which in turn cause the tensioner to let the chain jump time. Buy them for nothing takes 20 min to reset the chain on the gear.

Have you checked your distributor drive gear? When I took my front end apart recently I was off by just one tooth on that gear, and my engine would not run (it ran for about 30 seconds then died).

There is a notch on the dizzy drive gear that, when everything is at TBC, should appear JUST in front of the cam gear on the radiator side of the cam gear. Your dizzy will be at around 11:00 or 11:30 orientation, but this notch on the gear needs to be lined up properly or your timing will be way off.

The notch:

Installed WRONG (this is how mine was when I had the issues mentioned above):
