1988 Toyota pickup 22R stick shift bogging out & won’t shut off unless in 1st

I recently bought this well maintained 1988 Toyota pick up with the 22R stick shift with 231k miles on it! I’m happy with the truck but it’s my second day with the truck and I noticed it started to bog out on second and third gear then runs fine on higher speeds. The following day it started to struggle to start had to let it sit for the first few mins then it cranked up. I also noticed I wasn’t able to shut it off on neutral because if I did the motor continued to try to run and the motor keep shaking unless I let it stall out on first or else the motor will not stop shaking. Any help or tips would be highly suggested. I am new with this truck and know nothing about this motor so take it easy on me. Thank you guys!

The term for your engine continuing to run is dieseling. I used to have an 83 22r, and it had something called an idle cut solenoid on the carb. Could be that yours is not hooked up or not working. Search around for the factory service manual, guaranteed the steps for diagnosing your problem are in there.

As for the bogging, maybe you need a tune up.

The condition you describe is called “run on” or “dieseling” and can be caused by the carb throttle plates being too far open at idle.
That might be a compensation someone made to try to fix a late spark timing condition. So the first thing i would do is check timing with a timing light and apply vacuum to the vac advance canister in the distributor...by mouth or any method, just make sure it holds vac and you get some change when you do. Do it running or off.

Why does your 22RE (fuel injected) say "22R" (carbureted) on the valve cover?

What you're describing is "dieseling." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieseling Given your other issues, I'd start with checking the ignition timing. A timing light is only $30 https://www.harborfreight.com/timing...nce-40963.html . Don't forget to jumper TE1 to E1 when you check it.

It is a 2wd it more than likely has the 22R in it.

more than likely? the pictures of the engine shows a carburetor , carb air cleaner, and vacuum advance distributor. not just likely, it absolutely has a 22r.

I was trying to be less abrasive than saying "No you're wrong"

It is fairly easy to mix up terminology and specifics if you're unfamiliar with a certain vehicle/line of engines. We all need to start somewhere!

I remember when I was a young buck and got my first '88 4runner, a guy I was working with asked me if it had a V6, I said "Nope, it's got a V4!".. well I learned that day why it was called a "V" 6, and heard about it everyday for the 6 months I worked with that guy, lol.

As we like to say in my trade: "The only way to get this good, is years and year of Fing up!"

i would start by checking timing and set your idle speed. there is also a idle cut solenoid that is to help keep the engine from dieseling. normally if you have a problem with that it wont idle as its normally closed and opened by a 12v key on circuit but its possible someone cranked up the idle speed to try to compensate for a non working idle cut solenoid.

Heck, in that case, I should be a really good, very professional, Toyota mechanic by now!!

Have fun, all!
