I think the starter relay on your 1989 Truck lives on the passenger side fender apron and is a stand-alone unit, at least according to this post: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f131.../#post51275843

Yeah, I think it looks like this. green relay.
According to JPL's checks (photo with notes below) the starter relay on this gen is wired correctly. However, the cranking current still has to go over an unnecessarily-long path.

STARTER PROPERLY-WIRED PER MEMBER JPL'S CHECKS BUT CRANKING CURRENT STILL HAS TO GO A LONG WAY

MEMBER JPL DID THESE CHECKS AND VERIFIED THAT STARTER RELAY IS WIRED PROPERLY

Wasn't there some threads regarding moving the relay, with smaller guage wires back to the cab? Making the big current travel quite a bit less?
I'd search, but I got distracted on my own search.

Sorry. Carry on.

Hey. I'm new to this.......

So, I found relay. Passenger side. Stand alone. Painted over with who knows what.
Will test as soon as i find some free time.

Reason ???
No start. CLICK, click nuttin''..
Process of elimination..

If relay is bad, then i obviously gotta replace.
One reply had an after market replacement. I'll look into it.

BUT !!!!!
If relay test's OK. Then I guess it's starter replacement time....... YAY

Don't jump to conclusion. It took us a long time to learn our trucks.
I'm willing to bet your starter and your starter_relay are FINE.

Put us at your truck.
Model - year - engine - transmission?
What do you see?
Pics of relay AND SURROUNDINGS?
Wire colors? Pin-outs?
