Pull the motor...

 

Wheel choke, jack stand, lug wrench, Jack, 10mm socket, offset pliers..

Go through the access panel in the wheen well.

 

Pull throttle body. Unbolt AC compressor and lay to side. Easy access now.

My AC compressor is gone. Can't remember if just pulling throttle body with AC compressor mounted gives access to the hose or not.

Might as well change all three hoses while you are up under the intake especially if they are original hoses. Gates sells all three at a fair price. The two that go to the IAC valve are not listed in the Gates catalog...last time I checked.

 

These are such great little motors... why did they make them so complicated and difficult to work on?

 

These engines are not complicated or that difficult to work on, especially if you compare a 22R-E with, say a brand new BMW or a front wheel drive vehicle with a V6 where all the rear bank engine components are right up against the firewall underneath the intake.

A 22R-E is like a tractor engine in comparison.

Sure there are a few things, like this "U" shaped hose that are pretty difficult to get to, but the majority of components are staring you in the face when you open the hood.

 

I guess easy to work on is relative ...
my 83 cj7 was easy to work on... straight 6 no sensors, no fi, ... my 69 ss chevelle was easy to work on... my 85 k10 is simple and easy to work on... compared to the 22rte... the turbo does take it to another level...i don't even touch the LS1 in the C5...
Or the fj cruiser....

 

Maybe it's harder on a 2WD, but on my 4WD I didn't even have to remove the wheel. Easy access after removing the panel in the wheel well.

 

On a 2wd with no AC compressor, it can be done straight from the top.

Like I mentioned earlier. If the hoses are original factory hoses, might as well change them out all at one time. Cheap to do if using all Gates hoses.

One other thing concerning where the U-shaped coolant bypass hose connects to hard pipe. If it has been on there forever, there is probably some corrosion on the hard pipe. I used some fine emery cloth, and cleaned up the hard pipe.
