Odd Brake Pad Replacement Question (OEM pads don’t have the hole for the spring)
It should say in my signature but I have a ‘94 Pickup 4WD IFS Manual locking hubs.
Hi everyone, I’m replacing my brakes with OEM. Pads and rotors. I’m assembling them now and the W shaped spring can’t go in the proper place because the outboard OEM pad doesn’t have a hole for it. The inboard does but the outboard is just blank. The spring is supposed to go on the bottom of the pads so it looks like a W but I can only mount it on top of the pads so it makes an M. What gives?
Part number of pads are 04465-35040
Here are the old pads before I replaced them. Yes, they’re still good.
Here’s a picture of the new pads with the outboard pad on the right. Notice the blank where I’m expecting a hole.
I could install the spring on top but that will not pull the leading edge away from the rotor as it’s supposed to be. Can’t swap the pads around as the shape won’t let them insert all the way. What’s happening here? Am I crazy?
I suspect your pad was mis-manufactured, grab a drill and make it work.
Also, those springs are "anti-rattle" springs they do not have the power to push the pads away from the rotor.

Hmm, that would be weird since both the left and right outboard pads don’t have this hole but definitely a possibility! What do you think of just keeping the spring on the top in an M shape instead of drilling the pad?
So odd, in searching the part number in google images I see many of them are the same as mine with a missing hole. I’m guessing they’re not actually a bad production run. But I also see one from a Russian site of the same pads with the same part number that do have the hole.
I think I won’t drill them. I’ll just mount the spring upside down in an M shape.
If you swap the pads to different sides of the truck, the hole will then be on bottom like you want. Shouldn't be a problem to have it in the m shape however

That was my first thought. But the outboard pad will only go in the outboard position. It’s a different shape slightly and will hit the hub on the inside.
Glad you think the M shape is ok because I just buttoned it all up, haha. I really don’t see an issue though. In the future if someone thinks it is an issue, let me know and I’ll drill the pads.
If I was in the same boat as you, I'd leave it be. The spring is there to keep some tension on the pads. In the m shape they still do their job.
Cool, that makes sense to me. I do see that the squeal indicator is on the trailing edge of the pad and not the leading edge as it’s supposed to be. Might not get the squeal, but that’s ok. I keep an eye on those things anyway.

what Kolton said is true, I thought you were talking about top and bottom springs (I have both on mine) where you would need both holes, there would be no issue drilling another hole. but there will also be no issue leaving your spring on top rather than the bottom.

Yeah, I have left it as is and all seems good. I mean I go and then I stop. Hope to continue to do that.
