86 Toyota pickup 4x4 crank no start

I have a 1986 Toyota pickup 4x4. It started making a tapping sound. We adjusted the valves and it was fine until we drove for about thirty minutes. Then it made a loud tapping. We got it towed home and realized the timing chain guide was broken. After replacing the guides and the timing chain we filled all the fluids back up and went to start it. I cranked it and my boyfriend said he thought he heard the coil pack pop. It cranks fine and online said that the coil pack can just go out abruptly. Could this be the problem? Or could it be something else? I have only had the truck a few months and the coil pack does look as old as the truck. Also he said it must be electrical because with it cranking and not starting we tried starting it with starting fluid to see if that did anything and it did absolutely nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You don't have a "coil pack," you have an ignition coil AND an igniter. Of course, either one "popping" could kill it.

First check for spark. You can do it the old fashioned way by removing a plug, putting the wire on, holding it to something metal and grounded, turn the key, look to see if you can see a spark. Whew! Try not to get shocked.

Or the easy way. Get your $20 timing light (you need one anyway), hook it up and see if it flashes. You can do this on each plug wire (though only #1 would be used to actually set timing.)

Ok. I am going to advance anyway (the nearest part store is the next town over from where I live) so I will grab that and a timing light if they have one. Thank you

Ok. We have spark. Redoing the timing we think the chain was wrong. Or that's our best guess lol. Should know if it works in a few minutes
