Brian's 87 22r pickup

Hey guys, this is my first Toyota and I plan on restoring quite a bit in this truck. I just wanna create a timeline of what I'm doing here. I know nothing about mechanics but I know how to get help, read and ask questions. And who knows, maybe I can help some people out with the mistakes ive made lol. I got this truck for 1000.00 and I think it was a steal.

First thing I wanted to do was replace the carburetor. U can probably see why here.

Not a good photo, but the thing was a mess

The electric choke was disconnected and dangling by the wire, the truck would try to stall and die anytime I gave it a little more than a tap on the gas.

So of course I got the Weber 32/36 carb with an electric choke. I got the redline kit, came with everything. I got the first plate and gasket down, I didn't realize what I was doing and tightened the stud too far and it cracked that 2nd adapter plate. I was told it was cheap pot metal and was advised to get the one piece adapter from transdapt. From what I've read, its much better to have the single plate. But it wasn't redline's fault I broke theirs lol.

Heres the bottom plate.

I'll get a better pic of the transdapt adapter. The redline kit also came with the egr block off plate. I was told to leave all that intact, and that there's no reason to block it off so I also used the black plastic gasket thing that the stock carb was mounted to.

And with all that extra height from the bigger transdapt plate, and the black one, I still have clearance under the hood, thank god. I had some trouble getting the throttle linkage right, but I found someone else's build up thread and used his idea and just got bigger spacers. I'm planning on making a custom bracket so it fits better. I'll get a pic of what I did. I still don't like it but it will work for now.

22re. I thought you had the 22r. I need to replace my carb for sure. It does have an electric Choke and I have to prime it every morning to get it to start. Once from there it goes and goes with out any problem.

Put the EGR plate on, it's not doing anything for you at this point. You may not be finished yet, but it looks like you still have way too many vacuum lines attaches for a Weber carb. You are missing the distributor vacuum lines. Those spark plug wires do not look right. Hope you get it working, good luck>>>>>>

Ya Jay its a 22re motor converted from efi to carb. So, essentially a 22r. And Utah, ya the carb isn't finished. Still trying to figure out what to do with all the lines. Some have vaccuum, some don't. It's a mess. I'll tell you something funny though. Even with all that crap, it already runs soooo much better.

Remove all vacuum lines except the vacuum advance to the distributor and vacuum brake booster. Attach these lines to the intake manifold. Cap, plug, or remove all other lines. Best wishes

Well i got all the vacuum lines removed like Utah said, The truck idles and runs great, even though i haven't adjusted anything yet. I decided since i got the truck runnin decent and not over heating, i would start on the inside, electrical, etc... i'll post my upgrades and what i did below.

I got rid of the old fuel pump. I read that the weber 32/36 needs around 50-65 gph and my fuel pump, when i took the hose off the carb to fill up a gas can, there was little more than a trickle. Definitely not the gph my carb needed. This was probably part of my issues driving the truck. Anytime i gave the throttle little more than a slight push, the truck would try to die so i started out on the highway doing 50 mph and after about 30 min, i was down to 10 mph. I had to drive from west virginia to pa like that, a 2 hour drive took about 9 hours. I think i was getting vapor lock also because the old owner had the fuel line sitting on top of the upper radiator hose.

my new carter fuel pump

When i picked up the truck, there was no overflow tank/resevior, and the small hose coming off of the radiator was plugged with a pencil. Thats probably why my heater hose blew up and threw coolant all over my engine bay, thank god i was next to a truck stop. I called my old man, he's like "a pencil !!!!!!!" so he told me to take it out and get water and take it easy. I did, and then i ordered my new tank

my buddy told me i needed a new fan clutch and a fan shroud. He tried his "dollar bill" test by holding a bill against the grill to see if there was enough air moving to keep the bill sucked to the grill. There wasn't, but we got both of those things installed and now the dollar bill test is successful.

So, i'm still weary of overheating, although he said its not and running fine, no vapor lock, plenty of fuel, new carb and a broken temp gauge and gas gauge. The gas gauge i'm gonna check when i take the bed off. Oh ya, the fuel issue was partly due to a cheap pump and metal fuel line was blocked up. So i bypassed that line and bought 25 feet of fuel hose and now it works great. Also ADDED a fuel filter, i found my filter sitting on top of the frame by the gas tank, disconnected and not even attached to the truck. Anyway, i bought an after marked water temp/oil gauge from summit but didn't know where to mount it, so i did some fiberglass work and added the new bracket to my stereo face plate thing. heres some progress photos.

i used a bud light box for the support behind the cloth

with the lights on, i got 3 toggle switches from amazon that light up

oh yea, i need 3 of those metal clips that go on the plastic tabs of the faceplate thing. I checked a few websites and found www.clipsandfasteners.com and they have lots, but i'm not sure which ones to get. The 2 bottom clips are wider and the 2 top ones are more narrow. If anyone has an idea, please!!! let me know.

My dad gave me a good idea and said all the wiring and stuff would be cleaner and nicer if i got a power distribution block and ran a power and ground straight off the battery with some nice gauge wire. I haven't finished it yet and i still need to hook up the separate fuse block i got with it. OMG i messed up big time too. This is how i set it up first

i also bought those customizable little tab things to distribute the power across as many of the terminals as u want.

this is on the passenger side, next to the ac pipes i think

I'm sure anyone that knows about electrical can see my problem, i was so sad. I hooked up the battery and smoke started coming out of my cab. I quickly disconnected the battery and investigated. I burned the wire pretty good and the terminals got pretty hot. As u can see in the pic, the terminals on the hot block across from each other are hooked up together, i saw the plastic divider going down the middle and didn't even think about it.

i could have hooked it up differently, maybe used the first 5 for ground, and the other 5 for hot, but they would still be too close for comfort so i used a separate block for hot and ground

BAD!!!!

better

now i just have to figure out where to put them and whether to screw them in or use velcro so i can just rip it out to add more wires. I also thought about putting it behind my seat but i don't want those wires running back from the firewall across the floor to the back. What are your thoughts? and if i keep it under the dash, is there an easy way to keep the wire from getting kicked, etc...
