Hey guys,

Now that most of us are back fromt trips and back in the swing of school/work whatever I need to pose a question and a proposition. I'm thinking of going the rattle can/DIY paint job route. I can't really see paying $350-$450 for a shop to shoot my truck with crappy quality paint and then go mess it up anyways with you guys on the trails. So I'm looking into a rattle can options. I've heard that I need to find a dual action sander(neumatic) that it does the best job of removing paint and decals and that it leave no swirls. And that the cheepest route away from nothing but hand held cans is to get some Rustoleum in qt.'s and shoot it with a neumatic paint gun.

My question is, does anyone here have ANY experiance in paint and body work, and does ANYONE have ANY of these tools. I checked into renting a spray gun and air tank but it's $180 for a week, and I would have to buy a DA sander for 60 bucks, no one rent them. I could really use some HELP here guys, let me know if anyone can loan me tools or help me with the work??? I would really like to get this rolling while I still have my 96' as a daily driver.

Yeah I know, I already posted about painting ideas there, this thread was to see if the 4ROC crew could help out with supplying some tools and man hours.

 

DUDE, STOP WITH THE RATTLE CANS ! I spent the last 10 years build $100,000 street rods and show cars. Im helping seaflea out right now with a $4000.00 dollar body and paint job thats only running him about $800 in materials , not including new seal and weather strips. rattle cans was basically my idea, a cheapo fix for an old truck . . . but if you can get him a good paint job at a good price go for it i was tryin to free him up some money for parts

 

I still like the idea of rattle can'n it, but only if he can't do alot better than the red neck shop for $400, mostly better quality paint. Plus I could learn from a pro, the sheer cost of the tools needed to do even a rattle can job defeated the cost factor right off the bat. Just a good sander and a tank for a week ran close to $200 alone. Who knows my options are still open, I need the cash for parts more than anything right now.

 

Here is a pic of the front half of my runner after me and Mikey painted it.
He only uses quality paints and materials. The paint we used on my truck is Dupont choma base and Dupont choma clear.
I will warn though, he is somewhat of a perfectionist!

That is very nice, it wouold be a shame to mess up a nice job like that on the trails but if it's not too expensive then I might as well.

 

The nice thing about using basecoat/clear coat is that its ez to fix and blend in. White makes it even easyer. I've blended and repainted parts of my rig several things due to acts of stupidity :pat: .

Mikeys87, Sorry I never had a free minute to call you on Sunday about the paint job, after reading about your lift install I guess it was better off for you as well. When would be another time that I could call and talk about painting the Runner? Also is your name Mike, or Mikey, j/w.

Hey, Mikey, do you use a booth to bake the paint or air dry it?

 

Bake booths are for production, air dry is better for quality. However it is nice to have the climate control to keep the humdity down, and temp even for air drying. Got out for that line of work last year for health reasons, so now i just mess with it on the side for my trucks and friends in my garage(no booth). But it is nice having $40 grand worth of tools and metal working equipment in my garage for convience to play with.
