Need help find tdc on 22re

So I took apart my motor to do the timing chain and head gasket, had the motor at TDC on the compression stroke and pulled the head. Now I'm ready to put everything back together and it looks like someone moved the crank around. How can I get it back to the correct TDC position?

If the head is off, just roll the crank around til #1 piston is up and the crank pulley mark is on 0'.

Don't forget that the crank turns twice for each turn of the cam. As millball says, setting the crank is easy; just bring the piston to the top. Is that TDC on compression or exhaust? It isn't either until you put the head on. If you line up the bright links to the timing marks on both sprockets, it will go on at TDC Compression. (Which matters for when you install the distributor.)

One more question Im going to be using a different head and the guy I got it from didn't pull it off at TDC,does it matter? Can I put it on as is and adjust the cam to 12oclock and then attach the rocker assemble and tighten the head bolts or do I need to adjust the valves also?

Any time the rocker assembly is removed, the valve lash adjustments should be checked and corrected if necessary.

It is wise to chase the head bolt threads in the block and clean with compressed air before assembly.

No. You've got to line up the cam sprocket as part of putting the chain on; it doesn't matter where it starts from (I can't remember if the 22re is "non-interference" (the 3VZE is), so I would get the cam sprocket "close" before I put the head on.)

I'm with millball; the easiest way to adjust valves is with the head off, so why would you skip the opportunity?

scope- On a 22re, the rocker assembly is attached to the head by the headbolts which pass thru it.
The head and rocker arm unit must be attached to the block and the head torqued before valve lash can be set.

I know how to reassemble the motor but the question I had was since the head I'm using wasn't taken off at TDC does that matter? Can I just set the cam to 12 o'clock then tighten the head bolts/rocker assembly down and adjust valves as needed?

Just make sure the valves are not open on the cylinders that are at TDC so you don't bend the valves.
