I am new to this thread and this is my first post. The following will explain the reasoning for the buzzing sound coming from the evap canisiter on third gen 4runners after engine shutdown. Sometimes after shutting off the engine to these thirs gen 4runners there seems to be a buzzing noise coming from the evap canister. The reason this happens is because of the canister processing the gasses is not big enough to handle to amount of gas being pushed through. Along with this, the vacuum hose connected to the exit of the canister is too small for the amount of pressure from vapors being exited. The simple fix for this is to simple make the canister that the gasses enter bigger than it is. This is easily done from just taking another air tight canisiter and connecting it after the stock canister. This will allow for all of the gas to enter and not create a buzzing sound through the tube without buzzing the valve. Following are the pictures showing the procedure conducted that solved the problem perfectly without that annoying buzzing sound reoccuring.

I kind of do as well, but I got tired of explaining to people what was going on

 

Mine is the later 3rd Gen ('01) and if I am correct on the charcoal canister, it is located above the rear tire. Question I have is how to disconnect this connector? I am not having any luck at this time.

I've seen people have more problems with that thing than our little moo boxes and the fix not nearly as much fun. There was a write-up on how to replace part of it iirc, several years ago...pretty sure on yotatech...I'll look for it...Toyota didn't do oddball spring lock connectors like, say, Ford, did they?

Thanks habanero... I just come in to warm up and am thinking I might come with a way to get it off. I used two flat blade screw drivers and gently worked the sides of the clip. It is a pain to get off. I had it tested at Toyota and they diagnosed it for me. I have had the part for awhile and finally got around to getting it installed. I am guilty of over filling and learned my lesson. I was wanting to get some better picture but my drop light keeps putting an orange glow on there. I appreciate your help on this. No more over filling for me.

It seems like I've seen that connector somewhere else on a 4Runner, but chances are I'm mis-remembering.

Yeah, reading that thread I couldn't find made me chill on the last drop thing too, though maybe it's a bigger deal with the newer evap system.

 

this may be a dumb question but if i add something on it should it be completely sealed (of course at the main contact point) but should there be an exit point in the added can or whatever i use
