My 89 sr5 4x4 v6 3.0 yota has 250k on it. An the oil pressure runs a little low so I been putting 10w-30 oil in it with a qt of lucas oil additive to make it a little thicker. So my oil pressure runs a little higher. (That is if the oil pressure gauge is even working correctly?) My question is what kind of oil would you guys run in my situation? I have been thinking about switching to something different to see if I get a little better preformace over time. An naturally I want to get the most life out of my ol 3.slow I can get. I love my truck and really dont have a lot of money to throw in it right now.

So in a nut shell with a yota 3.0 v6 with 250k on it what kind of oil and what weight oil would you run?

 

Someone will probably bash you for starting an oil thread, but not me. Mine has a few less miles than yours and I have run Valoline synthetic 5/30 for years. I don't think the factory gauge really tells you much, other than it has some oil pressure, so I don't pay much attention to it. Thinner oil may not show as much pressure as thicker oil but it should flow a little better. If I was that concerned about it, I would put on a real gauge and then I would know what I have. You might want to try that.......

 

I agree that you should only use the stock gauge as a relative measurement. For example, maybe as an indicator that you need to change the oil filter.

I also agree that oil pressure is not everything. Thicker oil is not going to flow through the oil filter as quickly or lubricate the parts as well as the oil that the engine was designed for.

How long has it been since you changed the timing belt? If it has been awhile, tear the front of the engine apart and change the oil pump while you change the timing belt. Problem solved.

 

Oil flow = cooling and lubrication. I run 5/40 rotella t6 syn.. But theres not much wrong with 10/30 dino. Stay thinner.

 

In my 93 t100 3.0 and 243k I run valvoline 20w-50 high mileage conventional oil and a Bosch oil filter it's really thick and the 3.0 swallowed 5qts

 

Be nice to know what the real oil pressure is.

The sending units tend to degrade over time.

Put a mechanical gauge in so you have a real idea what is going on.

Is it the sending unit or are you getting clearance in the bearings

 

What kind of after markey oil pressure guage to most of you use and how hard is it to install? I have never put a oil pressure guage on anything. But I agree I need to know for sure what is going on instead of trusting the factory guage.

 

I have had good luck with Sun gauges and have used Auto Meter in the past.

Just remember to get the Metric adapter to go in the block.

A grommet where it comes through the firewall.
