oil in coolant. blown head replacement

300k+ miles 22re pickup.
anyone have a rough guess at the time involved to change the head and timing chain?

Found head kit and chain kit on ebay for 290 and 90 buck.
are these worth a crap?

Mechanic wants 1500. Ive tackled some big things on this truck, but nothing like this.

thanks.

I would check out engnbldr for high quality at a good price. As far as time. Just depends on your skill level. Some can do it in a day, some in a weekend. Some might take a month or more before they sell it for parts. If the head is warped don't have it milled. Just buy a new one. I personally would run a compression check first. Might be the gasket failed. Is it the stock timing chain? If so it probably broke the drivers side guide and maybe wore through the chain cover. Which will let water and oil mix. You can verify the guide is broken by pulling the valve cover and looking down the front of the motor. The 22r style motors are fairly easy to work on. Take lots of pictures as you take it apart. Good luck hope this helps.

I bet the chain might be the problem. Never replaced and it woukd make a rattle when it started. Always thought it was the valves. I'll get on the valve cover tomorrow. Thanks.

Try this link for timing chain parts. Odds are you cover is smoked as well.
The 4 piece front end kit is a good deal.

I would do the head gasket while your at it. Remember to put new head bolts in while your at it. They do stretch out and most will recommend new head bolts on all head gasket replacements.
