This might be a dumb question. 22re rebuild

So I bought a 22re minus the intake for $50, has a cool story behind it. But I'm going to rebuild it. I'm going to use the engnblrd master rebuild kit. This is where the dumb question come in, should I buy the kit before I go to the machine shop? I'm not planning on boring the engine, so just planning on running stock pistons. Also if the cylinders and crank don't look bad is it nessesary to go to the machine shop? The second question is dumber than the first because I'm planning on it, but just wondering. Thanks in advance guys! Also anyone have a spare intake they're willing to part with

I would at least put new rings in it if your tearing it down anyway.
Do you know if it even ran? Mileage on it? If it sat up for a while?

I amgoing to put new rings and pistons in, they come with the master rebuild kit. The engine is actually the original engine out of my 4runner. I bought it from the PO, didn't realize it was him till I went to pick it up. But it has around 200,000 on it. And ran when pulled. He said it was just tired so he pulled it. It sat for a a few months

50 doller 22re nice!! id just get the crank machined new bearings, piston rings, and go threw the head aswell...very nice deal on that 22re it will make a very cheap project.....unlike the 89 solid axle swapped yota that i bought for 3k....the damn front driveshaft broke off when driving it home and somehow didnt notice anything....was still driving normal and was in 2wd the whole time i have no idea how that driveline broke it was one of those custom square tubing drivelines

Yeah I almost felt guilty when I bought it. He threw in new leafs for the rear and a spare front drive shaft with the deal. So I paid 50 for all so that made the engine even less. So I have an extra if you need one! I was planning on having it looked over maybe some light honing of the cylinders and have the head cleaned. But I'm just excited to have a new motor the one that's in it now I can't barley get the timing set and it feels like I'm driving a slug.

Red face

You can do what you want but you never know what you have till you take things apart.

One can find interesting things when pistons come out .

Interesting at times what measuring things reveals

If the cylinders are round after 200,000 miles That is the reason to bore blocks to bring the cylinders back to round .

I'd have machine shop go through it. As said above you never know. Good time to plan engine out though.

Thanks for the replays guys! I finally got ahold of my uncle who owns a machine shop in eastern colorado. He said if I bring him the parts he'll clean them and go through them for free! so it looks like they're going to the machine shop! I already have the top end of the engine and everything looks really good so far, not even a lot of carbon build up. It's looking promising! I'll keep progress up to date on my build thread. Thanks again guys!

Even if you and your uncle live on oppisite sides of Colorado, it well worth the trip for you to have him to go thru it and since he is doing it for free. He will be able to tell you the condition of the block and all of the work that is needed to get it up to par can add up quick.

I second that, always get the crank machined, (checked).

With all the money your saving, I would get a Weber carb and an Offenhauser intake.

Why? EFI > carburetor.

For some reason I thought you were putting it in an older truck w/o EFI. Don't see anything in the thread now that would make me think that though. Guess because it was in the pre 84 forum.

Time to go visit your uncle and bring him his favorite beverage or food.

It's nice to have all your parts ready to go when rebuilding but...........you NEVER know for sure what you got until it's apart and inspected.

It would suck to pay for a non refundable kit and need different bearings, rings or pistons.

I'm still jealous just hearing about a fifty dollar motor for just about anything but a lawnmower lol. The cheapest 22r I've found was 150 with no accessories
