Cranks but wont fre...

I am sure this has been ask and answered a ton of times...I just havent found anything that matches what i am having an issue with...

Just picked up a 91 runner...it needed a tune up...after changing plugs wires cap and rotor..it wont start..when I first try to start it I get a backfire at the AFM...I have check and double checked and triple checked timing between TDC pully mark and distributor....any ideas? is there a flow chart type o check off list somewhere out there on the interweb?

I ran before the tune up...it ran like crap but yet it would start. ran rough..and would back fire when getting up to speed...which lead me to give it a tune up...also it looks like someone drove it though water prior to me getting it and then letting it sit for a year or so..

22RE only runs 20 seconds @a time

I have a problem engine which ran before it was torn down. Bought a basket case that needed engine. Installed reman 22RE short block figured out all the Vac lines and hoses. Engine started first crank ran 20 seconds and quit tried several time same result checked fuel pump, produces 70psi deadheaded about 45psi on truck fuel sys. has no port for fuel pressure used t @ the tank with tank sitting on the ground. removed vac from fuel reg made no diff in operation.restored fuel reg operation. figured truck was running on cold injector. hot wired cold injector, truck runs indefinitely with or without the fuel pump running. noid checked other injectors and they are being powered. Check injectors, they are clear when energized. Shoots a v pattern blowing thru them. Chiltons no help. I have been on other toy forums and they suggested here for solution.

I finally found what the problem with mine was. It had set idle for several months allowing the door in the maf control to corrode closed(aluminum to aluminum) The maf controls the fuel pump when the engine begins to draw air thru it it energizes the fuel pump. If the door is corroded and cannot open it will not allow the fuel pump after the initial 3-5 second run when you turn on the key. John at lc engineering tech services was very helpful unlike the RTFM person above. If he is so tired of sharing his experience perhaps he should not reply.

For info.... I have read and reread and then read it again the service manual that the one person advised to read.... I just wish someone would give real life possible solutions... With that said... I feel that the problem may possibly be timing... AFM is opening as it should it's getting spark and fuel.. I'm told I may have set distributor on the wrong stroke.. I'm told I'm looking at the wrong mark on the pull..

Have you checked the firing order and verified that the correct plug on the distributor cap is connected to the correct spark plug?
