22re "fires" wont run. Whines

I replaced the head gasket on my 87 runner.
22r with efi attached.
If I mess around with the distribution, it will either run for a few seconds and then die or it just won't fire at all.
Either way, there is a strong whine coming from in or on the motor.
It acts like a miss fire, it has spark and fuel.
Belts are okay, valves are adjusted.

Help me and the truck to stop whining please!

If compression is good across the board. Could it be off a tooth on the dizzy gear? Not sure it would even run. Air/vacuum leak? I have had one on the back of the plenum before. The more information you give us, the easier it is to help you.

"whine" is often the distributor. You can use a fancy-pants stethoscope http://www.harborfreight.com/mechani...ope-69913.html , but I've had good luck using the tube inside of a roll of paper towels.

You DO have the induction all hooked up, don't you? If you don't have air running through the VAF, the fuel pump only runs with the key turned to start. Once you let go of the key the pump will stop (air flowing through the VAF keeps the pump running).
