Let me explain my situation. I recently adjusted the valves on my 1994 toyota 4runner with a 22R-E engine. I got it as my first car a little over a year ago and the valve spacing was horrendous so i finally decided to do something about it.

After I adjusted my valves to the specifications recommended by my hanes manual (.3mm exhaust and .2mm intake) I put the engine block and vacuum hoses back on and tried starting it. It started instantaneously, and when it runs it sounds fine. But the engine won't stay running for more than 2 seconds. even if i step on the throttle. The hanes manual suggests my problem is the vacuum hoses that are the issue but i'm pretty sure i have mine plugged into the correct spots. The other thing i was thinking it could be is the fuel pump so i plan on checking that when i get the chance.

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and could give me advice in case i'm looking for the wrong solution. Also if anyone has a Vacuum hose wiring diagram that they are willing to share, that would be nice as well.

This 4runner is my daily driver so i want to get it up and running ASAP.

 

Is your air box wiring hooked up? Check for vacuum leaks as well.

 

Something didn't get connected back right. Go back over it.

 

Sounda like a MAF issue to me. Verify that it is plugged in tight and the terminals are in good shape. If all that checks out then you can hold the air door open on the MAF sensor and try starting it.

 

Like TerryS says, it sounds like the Air Flow Sensor on your air filter housing isn't connected.

The fuel pump runs while the iginition key is in the Start position but relies on air flow to keep it on while in the Run position.

 

Oops, I totally forgot to plug the cable back into my air intake box...
It starts up just fine now. Thank you guys.
