Gears & re-gearing(what is stock)??

Okay I was just wondering what gear ratio does a 96' Runner have stock. I got asked this question and had no idea how to even guess, so I told him I would ask and get back to him later.
Also if I were to re-gear what would be a good ratio to go to, so I could get back some of my pick up,(and make it easier on my tranny). I'm run'n 32's right now)if that helps any). Thanks.

Stock gears depend on what tranny you have, what size tires your rig came with, and if you have the e-locker. Tell us this info and someone should be able to tell you exactly.

You can get this info off your data plate under the hood. There should be 4 letters/numbers under Axle code. There is a web site that gives the info from those codes.

Dave, I have not seen that page before.
I like

I have used this one before, but it's harder to understand.

The one you linked is a lot easier.

Yoda/Corey: Can you please help me out. I have been trying to decipher my data plate info using the sites you both posted but I must be missing something. Here is what I have:

C/TR KF8/LA45 A/TM A03A/A340F

2001 Limited 4WD (stock tires 265/70-16).

Thanks for the help.

It doesn't look like your numbers coincide with the info.
I'll have to look mine up tomorrow.

Maybe there are more #s you did not list

Yeah, I figured I might have screwed something up. Steve Schafer had another site he had recommended but isn't up right now. I believe it used this info:

VZN185 - GKPZKA

Does that make any more sense?

Thanks...

Looking at the last half:
A (axle)/TM (transmission) A03A/A340F

So I assume Axle = A03A
Transmission= A340F

Going to the second chart on the site Corey had:
A= 7.5"
03=4:10 gearing
A= 2 pinion
The web site says the second chart has proven incorect on some vehicles.

Is your truck a 4 cylinder? I thought all V6 had 4 pinions.

Might go to the Stealer and ask them to decipher the code

Yoda: It's a V6. I didn't look at the 2nd chart on Corey's site because my VIN starts with "JT" like it says for the 1st chart.

The site Steve Schaefer always mentions (http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...es.htm#4Runner) is down. That one used the last code I posted (VZN185 - GKPZKA). On that chart, my code said I had a 4.30. So I thought I was good until I saw the sites you and Corey posted.

Unless somebody around here can un-confuse me this weekend, I will talk to the dealer next week and see what they say it is.

Thanks for the help...

Same with me

I also have a 2001 4Runner. Mine is the SR5 model with 4WD. I have the same code as bighead: A/TM - A03A/A340F. Any new news on it? I'm thinking it's the 4.10 gears but that's just speculation.

I found this site. I found it searching yotatech, actually.

EDIT: whoops, I see it is one that is already mentioned. It wasn't broke for me, though.

So, according to the table on the link above, I have 4.10 gears.
Here's my door jamb info:
VZN185L-GKMGKA 4.100 With P265/70R16

Apparently, Toyota changed the gear table info for 97-02 4runners.
