Ive got a terrible squealing noise once I get above 10mph. Sounds like may be speedometer cable, but may be something else. How do it get to speedometer cable to lube it? All U joints seem tight. Don't know how to check because it starts at 10 mph. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

 

It could be a wheel bearing. Try having someone drive the truck past you slowly and see which side it's coming from

 

Wheel bearing? It is for sure on drivers side. Really high pitch metal squeal. Ill check that. Thanks.

 

Have you gotten the rig muddy lately? I know my front end squeaks when it gets muddy, haven't been able to ID that culprit though. It goes away when i wash the mud off (read:never, i live on a dirt road.) or splash through a big enough puddle.

 

Sounds exactly like when the speedo cable was squeeling on my '95. The cable screws in towards the tail-end of the transfer case the just follow it up to the firewall. You have to access the rear of the gauge cluster but its straight forward with just screws and prying.I don't remember exactly what kind of oil I used but it was in a black and red on white tear-drop shaped bottle I had gotten at Home Depot like 4 years ago. I squirted as much into the cup shaped end then twisted the cable inside the sheath until it made its way down into there. Just do it a whole bunch and don't put the dash all the way back together until you're satisfied with the results. It lasted 6 months until I sold the 4Runner and who knows how long after

 

Sounds like 3 in 1 oil by the bottle you described

Do you access the speedometer cable from the inside or under the hood? I was thinking u must take it out to access?

 

Well, it follows the frame forward to the firewall, goes up and around behind the engine, kind of in the bell-housing tunnel, the goes through the firewall to the gauge cluster. So yes its under the hood.... and inside the cab.. and under the body..

What does the squealing sound like? I picked up a '93 T100 and I just noticed a squeal, that sounds like a serpentine belt, BUT is directly related to vehicle speed, not engine speed or anything else.

 

Mine was a high pitch kind of chirp more than a squeal, in varying intensity and frequency from a chirp every second at slower speeds to 2 or 3 chirps every second at higher mph. It started being present only when the temperature was below 0 f to almost constant. It actually came in waves, like it would squeel for a minute or two then go away for 10 minutes, and so forth, almost random. Oiling it really is an easy and cheap thing to do to figure out what the noise is, unless you break something, but it can take a while to get the cable out and fully lubed.

 

I found my issue. Center support bearing had seized so the outer race was spinning in the rubber. No wonder it sounded like a serpentine belt squealing!
