Tri-Y headers worth it or no?

hey guys i recently bought a set of doug thorley headers for my 82 carbed truck, but have you guys ever personally had the tri-y headers? would you get any gains at all? Im in a bind where im am stuck paying a restocking fee or pay for return shipping to get the correct header since they sent me the wrong one. I dont know what I should do.

I kind of impulsed the sale intially but ive been hearing some bad things about buying headers for the 22r..what you guys think?

Actually, from what i've read a header and 2.25'' exhaust is the best mod to do on these motors.
You could try searching, there's tons of info on this.

If they sent you the wrong one I wouldnt pay for the restocking fee.

I would send them an email that all you want is the correct header for your truck and its not like you are returning them and not doing business with them.

I know know much about 22r(e)'s but im sure it does make an improvement.

depends

from what I gather, a 4-2-1 (or tri-Y) will give the 22re better low RPM torque, while a 4-1 collector style will be better for mid to high RPMS

EITHER will help the motor breath better, and pared with a cam will give a pretty significant torque increase

personally, I'm running the el-cheapo PaceSetter 4-1 header on my 22re right now, and I plan on replacing it with a Thorley 4-2-1 tri-Y in the near future

Just a bit of info on the tri Y header , Carroll Shelby invented them for the Ford 427 to fit inside the first Cobra's in the 60's that in and of itself should tell you all you really need to know about a tri Y lol , he still uses them today on the new cobras he builds and yes they do make that much of a difference.

I ran a Stans Tri-Y on my 90 22RE in an Xtracab pickup and with 2.25" exhaust.

It really helped with pulling a loaded truck and loaded tent trailer over mountain passes.

I once emailed Ted (Engnbldr) asking about headers. As an aside he noted that the stock Toyota manifold is actually well designed for low-end response.

Well, Ive been hearing if you don't put a cam in or upgrade the Carb, you rrealy wont gain any difference to justify the cost of the header. At first I was all juiced about it, then I got my buddy that has an 84 carbed with a stock manifold telling me that it wont make a difference really.

Idk maybe with the EFI you get more gains because the ECU notices the increase in flow and richens the mixture?

Very happy with my LCE's, cheaper than tri-y's.....saying that- if I had the extra $300 I would love to put on the tri-y's. You'll notice a difference. Mine were a breeze to install.
