Gas mileage is horrible.

1994 P/U 22re (with 36,000 miles on engine). Alright, i am tired of getting 13-14 mpg, i believe i have a vacuum leak, because i get alot of idle surging as well as bucking in 1st gear when gas pedal is barely being pushed.

Now, i am running 35's and 5.29's but i would think if the engine is running tip top that i should get close to 17-18 mpg, any one that has a similar truck or experience with this issue plz chime in, its breaking my bank as this is my DD and on average i drive 60-70 miles per workday Mon-Fri and am spending 80-100 dollars per week.

Thanks yall

Have you ever changed the upstream o2 sensor?

No. Code does come up on reader. I didnt bother cause there is no Catalytic Converter, so wouldnt it be a waste without that?

Code reader?, 94 should be a OBD1.
A paper clip on diagnostic port TE1 and E1 should show constant flashing for no codes stored or pause flashing, indicating a code stored.
So is there a o2 sensor even on it?

I believe you read it wrong. When i said NO i was answer your question about weather or not i replace the upstream O2, and the answer is NO. I was also letting you know that a code does show up and i cant remember if it was O2 code or catylist system..... And yes it is OBD1. There is an O2 sensor after where the cat would go, so i guess that would actually be down stream. I will check if there is an upstream.

I did read it right, I was questioning when you mentioned "code reader"
Just seemed odd on a OBD1

With those tires and the wind resistance under the lifted truck your mileage will suffer.

Get some smaller tires if your commuting every day.

remove as much weight as possible.

Buy a car or Bike for going to work.

If you dont have a California model, it wont have the O2 Sensor behind the catalytic converter so that wouldnt cause you a problem. I have fixed alot of problems with just cleaning the Plenum ( actually doing that now>>> https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52146627 ,pages 81 and 82 ) a great tune up using high quality parts, making sure there are no leaks, testing all sensors and giving them a good cleaning as well. Most likely your O2 Sensor is orgianal and would need to be replaced as well. I have gotten away with cleaning the O2 sensor.

I get my Denso plug wires off of ebay, plugs, cap and rotor from Toyota, and get the part number off of www.sparkplugs.com and use that part number for the O2 sensor on ebay for a little cheaper.

I have alway been able to clean an EGR and get rid of the codes that way. Never had to replace one yet, but it might not would pass emissions but I have never had a problem after cleaning one.

This toyota was built in Japan, and i see no indication of it being from California.

There is a white sticker when you lift the hood. It will be underneath and will be on Passenger side, if it is till there. It will say Cali Emiss or Fed Emiss. It will show vac lines and tell information for timing.

I appreciate you commenting, but not the type of advice i was asking for. Im not changing tires/gears. And there is nothing to remove as far as weight goes.

No worries, Iam always learning.
Terry is right, me being from California I just assumed it has o2 sensors.
I thought that all cars/trucks manufactured after a certain year had federal emissions systems, which included o2 sensors.
(I just learned something )

But I must say my rig was manufactured in Japan also, but was probably designated for California as it has emissions system on it including an upstream and downstream o2 sensor on it.

Maybe you can also find out what code your buddy said it's throwing.
Might be able to pin down problem a little easier.
Keep us advised.

Regardless of what state, country, county, continent or parish you are in if the vehicle does not have the parts on it that it was designed to run efficiently with it will not. Just because of where you are does not mean you can ditch a 02 sensor or the Cat if the computer NEEDS it.

We need to figure out what your vehicle requires.
