went to alter ignition timing could not get t1 te1 jumped to get flashing cel light. so turned engine on and moved dizzy using rubber gloves(health and safety). Moved to highest rev point before ecu lowered it. Anti clockwise movement by a fraction of an inch stalled engine. so moved clockwise. mark on dizzy moved from left hand side of mark to. an inch to right of engine mark. went for test drive feels much better. does this mean its set right. all advice will be grafully recieved.

1) Use a timing light. $20 http://www.harborfreight.com/xenon-t...ight-3343.html http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...3551/N0665.oap, and you need one anyway.

2) Yes, the manual says to jumper TE1 to E1. If the CEL doesn't flash, you haven't jumped it correctly, and you cannot set the timing correctly. You need to figure that out; if you have a wiring problem there you're just sliding backwards.

A little off topic but what if u don't jump the TE1 and E1 and still set the timing?

 

Timing is "base timing" plus/minus a number of other factors, including temperature. Using the jumper turns off the "other" factors, so that you are reading/setting base timing directly. Without the jumper, you're not setting base timing, you're setting something else. If all your plus/minus factors happen to add to zero, you're in luck. Otherwise, not.

 

I guess I'll reset timing with a jumper installed. This time. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for replies. mate is going to bring over his timing light. jumping t1 and te1i'm 3mm copper cable is this too thick. reason being my dianostic port looks as is its been filled with vasaline/petrolum jelly !!!!!!!!! Any tips on how to remove without damaging connections

Hi thanks to scope 123 timing is now set. The copper wire i was using was too thick. not hard to adjust once marks are painted. groove on pully and timing numbers on block. timing is now almost on marks for setting dizzy before fine tuning with timing light. Orginal timing i estimate was on dead

sorry phone sent message before i finished. estimate timing was on top dead centre and 10 less than i set it yesterday. see how it runs and might add a couple of degrees advance.

It's dieletric grease, it's purpose is to seal moisture out and prevent corrosion.
I would recommend not removing it.
