The search bar turned up nothing so i figured i would be the one to open this can o' worms.
I am about to change the oil for the first on my new truck and i want to make sure i'm giving it the best i can, so tell me what you think the best combo is. Synthetic? Real? Brands? Capacity?

What do you use and why?

 

I use mobile 5w-30 it's about 20bucks for a gallon and it's good name brand oil, filter I usually go with fram

 

Interesting. I have heard nothing but bad about fram recently. Of course no evidence, just general bad feeling from those i have talked to.

 

Purolator PureOnes are a great filter, better made than Frams. I use the PL30001, which is the biggest filter the 22RE can fit (4x over stock).

Pick any name brand of oil. Your engine will not know the difference. Synthetics are good if you have extreme temps or want to run an extended drain. I usually use a 10w-40 or 5w-40.

I mean running your oil more than 5000 miles or so.

Conventional = 5000 miles
Syn blend = 6000-8000
High-quality synth (like Mobil 1) = up to 10,000

 

Ah, gotcha. You also mentioned running a larger filter. Is there an advantage to that? I understand that it would increase the surface area of the filter material but would it not also decrease the oil pressure by increasing the system volume?

 

I only run the Toyota OEM filter and 10w-40 conventional oil. I switch brands depending on price but its usually either Castrol or Valvoline.

 

I use OEM Toyota filters. I bought my last set 10 at a time to get bulk pricing. Not more than a dollar more than the aftermarket ones. I have noticed that when changing oil, the Toyota filter is way heavier and barely any oil drains out after removal. By comparison, aftermarket filters drain nearly all their oil. When using the aftermarket filters this means it takes a little longer to fill the filter and start lubing the engine.

For oil, I use Castrol GTX only because my dad has used it for years. Other than that I have no reason to choose that over another. I think synthetic is a waste of money but once again, personal choice. I use 10w-40 instead of the 10w-30 the manual recommends. This is to keep the oil pressure up in the crappy remanned engine the P/O put in.

 

Same thing, always use OEM filters.
I have a preference for Shell Rotella 15-40
My other vehicles are diesels so I always have some on hand
and it works great. Was also surprised to see people running
it in their big bore KTM dual sports.

Hmm, the consensus appears to be OEM filters. I don't have a stealership anywhere close so it will have to be purolator this time but next time i'm over near the stealership i will pick up a case.

 

+1 for oem oil filter. There was a study somewhere on here that had numbers that were pretty impressive. Eventually you just learn that Toyota OEM, is usually just a superior product.

 

Well after a trip round town to see what was available i am running a Purolator One with Castrol GTX 10w-30. When i get over to the dealership i will pick up a case of filters.

In the 22rec engines i run castroil 20/50 some of these engines had 250,000 miles I run the wix filters I forget what number

I changed the oil about every 3 months or sooner mileage any where from 1000 to 3000 miles

lots of short 5 or less mile trips

1000 to 3000 miles per change? You're just throwing away money. If the oil is only in there that long you could use the crappiest oil and filter and still be fine.

 

Eh....I change mine every 3k just out of habit. I agree definitely with every 3k with nothing but city stop and go. I run Mobil synthetic 10w30 and a Mobil filter. I used the Toyota G1 filter and didn't like dry start so much so I switched back to the Mobil filter.
But to me its really all preference of your 22r/re and what mods you have done imho.
