I bought a '85 (fuel injected) 4runner Rock crawler without engine. I put in a 22re out of a '92. It will start up when it sets over night and outside temp. is 30or below.Wont start up when it gets warm out, or when engine is warm. When it doesnt start, all it takes is a shot of carb. cleaner in air intake, fires right up and runs fine. Fuel pressure is 45psi. Stumped

 

Check fuel pressure to make sure its holding pressure in the line after its off

 

fuel pressure drops to around 18 but as soon as you crank it it goes to 45 psi. always starts right up when setting overnight.

 

Ohm out your cold start thermo switch. Mind the temp outside when you check it.

 

replaced cold start thermo switch with known good one.... no change, started up ran 5 mins, shut off. wont restart unless i give it a shot of carb clean

 

Aside from replacing parts, you did check your connections, right? I found out that was the only problem with mine.

I have went over connections several times. Just cant figure why it only takes just a shot of carb clean to start after its warmed up alittle. Why would it need just that little bit more of fuel to start?

 

Did you solve this one?? My 85 is doing pretty much the same thing. It has an engine that looks like it came from a 3rd ten truck, and so I replaced all the vacuum lines to rule that out as a contributing factor.

Getting ready to do a fuel pressure test, and also there is the test for the fuel pump itself getting power during warm start by shorting the test leads in the engine compartment.

Where do I go to purchase components to do a fuel pressure test???

 

Water in gas tank? If it starts well when cold could be cause water is frozen, then when it is warm it melts and messes things up.

 

I'm sure that's a good tip, but here in Central California, we haven't seen freezing for about 6 or 8 weeks!!

I got a new CAT on it this week, and I think there was some restriction in the old one. Readjusted the timing again, and so far it seems to be running for me.

I've adjusted the timing twice, both times moving it from about "0" over to 5 BTDC. The timing must have been too far forward??

 

I'm having the same exact issues in my 89 Someone on here told me to check timing and I haven't got around to it yet. I'm hoping that this is the fix but my question is what causes the truck to jump timing?
