I'm going to the junk yard today and I'm gonna be looking for 4.30's or 4.56 thirds. these are commonly found in v6 automatic 4runners, will the v6 third bolt into my 4cyl axel housing? I know e locker thirds are different, but I don't know if just the thirds are. I'm asking cause if I buy a locker, they have 6 or 4 cyl options for a locker. Is this cause power or cause they're different??

Short way of asking is will a v6 third bolt in front and rear? And when I go to buy a Aussie do I buy 6 or 4 cyl locker?

 

Yes the v6 third will bolt into your 4cyl housing.

The reason for the two different locker options is on of the 4cyl carrier bearings is a smaller inside diameter.

What size tires are you planning that you want to regear?

 

33x10.50x15. Will I need new axle shafts if the bearing is bigger? Or is it OD larger and ID the same?

Sorry yes, the outside diameter of the carrier is smaller. The ID is the same. I think, I'm confusing myself now! haha.

Either way, you do NOT need new axles, they are all 30 spline for a Toy 8".

you need to read the door tags tag to tell what came with 4.56. my 94 v6 manual truck has 4.56 from the factory. some v6 auto 4runners have 4.88 from the factory. good luck finding them. gears are usualy one of the first things taken on Toyotas.

Yea I know the door tag thing. Just hope its acurate. Mine says my truck is an auto when it's a 5speed haha

 

the only true way to know the gears is to pull them and count.

 

Went to the yard with my brother and every single runner with anythin over 4.10's were freshly taken. Someone was there maybe an hour or less and got every third. I mean I missed it all by nothing. But I did find a 94 with a literally showroom quality interior and snaked everything I could. I'll keep the eyes out and maybe will just buy 4.56 gears and learn to set em up myself. Probably wouldn't be a bad skill to have under my belt.

The 2nd gen v6 Auto came with 4.88's I believe (because all the v6 I see are w 31" tires which came w the lower gears). I got a front IFS diff from a 1st gen 4runner manual that had the 3.0. It has yellow paint on the pinion which means the 4.56 set up but I will double check that by pulling the cover and counting teeth to be sure. But the best way to be sure of the gear ratio is get the gear code off the door tag or I believe for the 1st gens, it was under the hood. As for the 4.88's, that diff can only use Toyota 4.88 gears. If you break it you could only get new gears from Toyota as the carrier is different than all other 8" diffs. This from another site:

The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit
