Ok so i did some wheeling last night at the local sand pits. Nothing too crazy cause im scared of breaking stuf my trucks mostly original. Just looked underneath my truck this morning and noticed a smal amount of gear oil on my rear right tire. I do not see it in any other place except for a small drop at the bottom of the brake. Im guessing its an inner axle seal? Any help would be much obliged!

 

Yep inner axle seal is leaking. Time for new seals and new shoes

 

Seems like the seals typically fail when the bearings are on their way out.

alright heard that! Hey judging by what you see in the picture would you say itd be ok to ride it like it is for a few days till parts come in? The leak spring overnight while it sat and i have maybe a quarter sized puddle of gear oil on the ground when i checked.

 

my neighbors mom's 4 runner has this same issue. i told her she needed to change seals and bearings. her rear brakes dont work cause of the oil and her pumpkin is about 3/4 full. this was months ago. she's still driving it around today. i told her i'd fix it for free if she bought the parts. never heard back.

yea i just went ahead and topped off the differential, ill just have to monitor it and see at what rate my loss is... thankfully though its only leaking out of one side for now so ill still have some rear braking.

 

Are there any other parts i should replace while im in there? Im going to be ordering two of these kits from Marlin Crawler, along with their eco-seals.

might as well get the drums turned if you're getting new brake shoes. for my year i know the axle shafts need to machined or something before reinstalling them. something about burrs on the splines or something. not sure, didnt read too much into it. might be worth looking into it though

 

good time to change the diff oil too

 

for sure going to look into that! i just bought a manual today so ill be sifting through it for info. And yes i already have some sythetic apdli-4 diff gear oil to throw in thre as well

 

If you're going to replace the bearings, I tell every one this. Get OEM bearings. Online or local. When I worked for NAPA, I sold alot of bearings. For the toyota's we sold KOYO and occasionally NSK bearings. Both made in Japan. the part number is 936.

 

thanks man! I just went ahead an got a 2 service kits from Marlin Crawler. I'm going to replace everything, I don't want to have to mess with it for another 5 years lol

 

You might want to replace the wheel cylinder while you are there and have it all apart. i just did all this today. i had napa press in the bearing and outer seal and when i got my axle back from them it was all clean. idk what they used to clean it, could be some kind of solution dip or something but ruined my wheel cylinder. when i went to bleed my brakes, one side of the cylinder inflated and i squeezed it and a milky brown liquid came out. just a heads up idk if you have already done the job or not but change the wheel cylinder especially if they look original. hopefully that marlin crawler set comes with them idk but if they do you'll be fine.

 

I already replaced the inner seals with beefy eco seal from marlincrawler as well as bearings o rings snap rings and outer seals. fortunately my brakes bled well. but the leaking gear oil did a helluva number on my brake pads and shoes.

 

the drums can be cleaned. the shoes.....not so much. use brake cleaner to clean the drums. it'll clean them in no time

 

10-4 on the shoes. The rest im going to go ahead and replace, spring, pads all of it.

 

OJM - drums are to drum brakes as discs (rotors) are to disc brakes. Also, disc brakes have pads, drum brakes have shoes.

Just thought I'd throw that out there since there seemed to be some confusion.

Haha you are correct, i know the terms just keep putting them in the wrong spots. doesnt help that my old truck had discs all the way around either.
