Hey guys quick question

Puttn my 3.0 back together.

FSM says to use FIPG for the oil pan baffle and oil pan gasket.

However my master kit came with TWO cork gaskets for the oil pan and baffle.

Should I use Black High Temp FIPG or the cork, or a combination of both?

FIPG, no doubt. Use a bunch, finger tighten the bolts, wait 20 mins, torque to spec. Never use both.

 

FIPG is characterized by VERY fast set time (as vasinvictor says, after 20 min it's been done for 15 min). Good if you're charging by the hour, not as good if you're a hacker like me. I prefer RTV, which gives me a little more time to work. You need to let it set overnight, but I've got time.

I have had good success with cork gaskets, but as vasinvictor says, make a choice. Don't use both.

 

good point... did that to the oil pan on my 22re once... that, didn't go so well...

 

I used Permatex Ultra Grey. Put it on the pan and inststalled. No leaks.

 

Fipg.

 

Ditto. Ultra grey or Ultra black. Never had a leak when I have used either one.

 

You'll never get the pan on with gaskets; the bolts are too short. Definitely FIPG or a reasonable alternative.

Got a tube of ultra black for the oil pump and rear seal retainer so I'm good to go today.

Anybody need some cork gaskets??

Earlier 3VZ-Es have longer bolts/studs to accomodate the cork gaskets. Later 3VZ-Es have the short bolts/studs that prohibit the use of the cork gaskets. I don't know which years have what(but my 88 has the longer bolts/studs).

Seems like we've had this conversation before. Maybe because we have.

 

Funny thing the FSM shows the rear seal retainer being sealed using FIPG but the exploaded diagram shows an actual felt gasket.

My kit came with a felt gasket.

Which one should I have useD. I already used FIPG.

It does? Which diagram, where?Felt? Are you sure about that? The only ones I've seen are the "paper" type.

Either one. FIPG is perfectly fine.
