According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_engines the Fuel-Injected straight four is a 22R-E.

Better yet, 4Crawler says you have the engine code on the VIN plate. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ToyVIN.shtml

Remember: none of this tells you what engine you pulled out of your 24-yr old truck. Who knows?

22r or re has exhaust on the drivers side.

88's came with either 22r with carb, 22re with efi, or 3.0 v6.

On a 1988 Pickup the only motor options were the 22RE 4-Cylinder or the 3.0 V6. The 22RE is inline and has TOYOTA prominently embossed on top of the valve cover. The 3.0 V6 has plastic EVERYWHERE.

The REC has the extra emissions crap required in California.

I am probably wrong but I -think- the 22REC is the california model with more emissions equipment on a regular old 22RE. I'm pretty sure the block and internals are all the same.
