I just got my first 4x4. 85 4runner w/ 22re & 5spd trans.

I just did the first oil change. Put in 4.5 quarts, ran the engine for 2 minutes, shut if off, then checked the oil. Oil level doesn't even register on the dipstick. I suspect the dipstick is too short.

Can anyone tell me the length of their dipstick...or any other advice?

 

my dipstick on me 86 22re and my 82 22r is right at 23.5 inches, are you sure the motor isnt that clean that you just cant see the oil? thats how my 86 22re is, i have to take it into the shade and run my finger down the dipstick to find the oil level

 

Let the engine sit for 20-30 min after running so the oil can make it's way back into the pan. dipstick will read low while running or right after.

Yes, solid front axle. All original SR5 with 176k on the odometer.

my dipstick is about 14 in. haha. i thought it looked strange. Looks like ill be heading out to find a new dipstick. checked it again (it's been about an hour) and its still bone dry to the touch. the motor sounds like it needed the oil change, so i think i got the oil level right.

sounds like youve got an awesome ride there, sr5 85 is a rare one, only a few on here, pics for sure! start a build thread to track your progress!

 

quick update.

i drove around to 3 local parts stores in my city and no one carries much for this truck...big surprise there. the local 4x4 shop recommended i go to a nearby mini truck junkyard, which was going to be my next stop anyway.

I'll update with pics of the old and correct dipstick and some other shots...probably tomorrow.

The truck pretty much fell in my lap (first truck i looked at). I bought it from a guy who spent a lot of time and money restoring the truck back to factory condition. I only have a few minor things to fix like leaf spring issues and some seeping from a transfer case seal. He did a great job so everything works

 

All this talk and no pics, you can't come on here with an 85 sr5 SFA and not make it top priority. DO IT NOW!!!!! just kidding but we still need pics.

 

So, you you come to Yotatech with an '85 4Runner...SR5...mostly restored...and NO PICTURES!? Until we see it, it doesn't exist . Seriously though, this is a place full of Toyota junkies and this is the truck we all wish we had. Can't wait to see some pics.

OMG.....I hate your face, in a nice way. Dang the seats, the front axle way cool!! even the stereo is great. Man just wonderful it was worth the wait for pics

Just noticed the tow sticker on the front!! Is this a factory thing or did the guy get a sticker??

 

Damn, I just made a mess in my pants. That thing is gorgeous! It's rare to see one of these at all let alone in this condition. What are your plans for it? If it were mine I would try to keep it as close to stock as possible. Maybe an inch or two of lift and some 31's. You should post these in the "Post Your Pics" thread, I have a sneaking suspicion Chef will go ape $#!T when he sees this one. He likes the red ones .

 

Me rikey. That's a very clean rig.

 

the stereo is factory and still works perfectly. the tow sticker is a mystery to me, but it was done well, so i'll leave it for now

 

plans are to keep it modest and mostly stock for now. the front left tire is a 31x10.5 so i'll probably go with that size all around with some new black steel wheels. she's my daily, so probably keep her mostly original.

Your plan sounds wonderful, on the wheels mayby something a little better that black steelies it won't do that sweet rig justice, go for some newer painted black factory wheels or some sort or some mild black aftermarkets nothing blingy but you know what I mean. The black steelies are ok but more on a beat up wheeler not your gem

 

^X2 on no black steelies. I bet some Tacoma wheels would look really good on it.
