just bought a 1994 toyota 3.0, auto. 120k original miles. Guy said he drove it for a year did great then one days started cutting out. It starts fine. idles, but will only get up around 20 mph and cutting out. Transmission seems fine. He said the trans never slipped prior to cutting out. He has replaced the fuel pump, mass air flow, ECU fuse, plugs and has added an ebay fuel regulator which he has set at 15 psi. Any ideas or what could be wrong? Seems to be a fuel delivery problem. Injectors? TPS? No check lights present.

did he replace fuel filter? have u checked timing of the dist. to make sure thats not it? other then get it to your house have u dont anything else? check all vacuum hoses for leaks, or cracks?

 

ditto on the fuel filter i doubt its the injectors maybe bad gas

 

Just spoke with him again to go over all the items he replaced. After the truck started doing this he replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, mass air flow, ECU fuse, distributor cap/rotor. He then replaced the fuel pressure regulator with an ebay one. Also he replaced the TPS sensor. Said it did not change the way the truck ran so he took it back for a refund.

 

now when u say cutting out, u mean the motor stops or just wont let u get over 20? if u are in neutral can u rev the motor over 4000 rpms or higher? has the tranny fluid and fliter been changed?

 

It just hesitates a bunch and does not really allow you to go over 20 or so. If reved in neutral i believe it would cut out as well.

 

Ill check all the vacuum lines when i go to my shop tomorrow. Anything else it could be?

 

Have you checked for any codes stored?

 

If the fuel pressure is set at 15psi the truck won't run at all. Are you back to a stock fuel pressure regulator?

The first thing I would check is the ignition timing. It may or may not be your problem, but it's easy to do. I would then run the FSM checks on the throttle position sensor (TPS).

I agree with the others that it could be a fuel delivery issue (once you've ruled out timing and TPS). To check that you need to drive it with a fuel pressure gauge (you'll need one with the Banjo bolt fitting, like an Actron CP7838). BEFORE you do that, take a look at the plugs. If you have one or two that look very different, you might have an injector that isn't working correctly.

So far, it sorta sounds like your prior owner was just throwing parts at it. Don't you do that.

 

lol dirty fuel line? or bad ground for the fuel system (thinking more on injector harness)

 

I know this sounds really simple but how are the spark plug wires? They made my 3.0 run terribly when I bought it. They were so toasted I could literally rip them in half with my bare hands like a piece of paper.

 

Have you figured it out yet. I have a buddy with a 88 3.0 and similar problems
