New guy needs advice

Just had a tune up done on my '94 V6 with 142,000 miles. Local shop told me that I have low compression from the #3 cylinder and they traced it to a burnt valve. He recomends that I get a valve grind and that the dealership is about the only place to get it done. Calling around it seems to be $2,500 - 3,000. So the questions I have are, other than it needing to be done, is it worth getting it done? Or should I look at getting the engine replaced, maybe with a newer 3.4? I know this isnt catastrophic ..... but what is the best course of action? Any advice would be welcomed and thanked. As much as I have read on here I will definately take the advice. Thanks in advance. And I hope I put this in the right Forum....forgive me if I didnt.

It may be cheaper to get a used 3.0L from Japan. There are a ton of Japanese engine importers that you can get the engine from.

This I assume is them doing all the work? You could pull the head yourself and take it to a NAPA, they usually will do valve jobs cheaply. This is of course if you are set up to remove and replace it yourself.

Last time I checked on an engine replacement for my 1991 3.0 was two months ago. They quoted $4,400.00. You definently have a few options. Do the work & see what happens down the road, replace the engine with a used 3.0, do an engine conversion such as a 3.4 or 4.3 swap. If it were me and I had the money I would get another engine and start over. Blue

Thanks for the advice. Yes that was for them doing all of the work. I am taking it in for a "second opinion" tomorrow so I will have the weekend to try and figure out what to do. Thanks again for the advice and I'll keep you posted....

Hey BBB-

How many miles are on that 3.0 that UpNDaAir is selling??? I have a friend who might be interested.

As far as the topic at hand...I would go for a 3.4 or 4.3 (depending on which number you want to put first), you will be much happier with the power output that those engines give!

King,
It started to run a bit rough so I scheduled the tune up and the day before I went in the Check Engine light came on steady. The shop told me the error codes were 14 & 25. The #2 spark plug was working its way out and the wires were weak so that all got replaced and still had a miss. I had them finish the tune up and that was when they found the #3 valve was bad. Then the second opinion confirmed that the valve was bad. 60% bypass on the #3 exhaust valve.

So that is where I am at now. The finances are a bit tight for a new motor because I would loose the core if I upgrade, so Im looking into getting a new set of heads and replacing them that way rather than the rebuild, see if that saves some funds....any other ideas ?????

Thanks to all that have replied and for the advice.
