Bought a 95 4runner 22re and it had an intermittent low idle ranging from 500 to 800RPM. I prefer to clean tb's before adjusting idle. The entire tb and manifold are coated in black goop. I cleaned the tb and ran the wynn's atomizer and intake cleaner 3 time with little sucsess inside the manifold. I set the idle to 800 RPM. It now idles anywhere from 800 to 2300 RPM. I plan on taking the upper and lower manifolds off and cleaning them. Any suggestions or warnings. Also opinions on this causing my occasional valve tick. Goo in valve guides?

 

I suggest taking the Plenum off and then remove your Throttle Body and take the Plenum to a carwash and use high pressure soap to get the carbon out. Could even try presoaking with some carb cleaner or oven cleaner.

I have it listed in my 88s build on the first page and on my 86 it is in the first few pages of the build listed below. You will need to clean all of the lines that attach to the Plenum as most are going to be clogged. One reason I make a block off plate to stop the build up. 88s build is better describing it. You will be amazed at the amount of carbon build up in there.

As far as valve tick, probably need to adjust your valves. Not a bad job to do. Try getting an engine flush or try the Seafoam if you have some heavy build up under your valve cover. One old timer showed me that having a 50/50 diesel and oil mix and letting it idle for about 10 to 15 minutes to help flush a real bad built up motor. I have done it several times and no problems,but usually dont suggest it on here, and only if it is thick with build up.

 

On my 3VZE (different configuration, but same problem) I found that I had lots of oil and grease which came loose by soaking it in the kitchen sink overnight in a strong solution of dishwasher soap (an advantage of living alone). But with the oil gone, I was left with a firm coating of (mostly) carbon, which I had to scrape out with a wooden stick.

This is a messy job, but just plan for a mess and stick with it. As Terrys87 points out, you can have a lot of the ports clogged up. Before cleaning the plenum, my PS idle-up didn't work, after cleaning it worked.

 

Oven cleaner & a pressure washer will wotk.

Unfortunately, this happens with all fuel injected engines.

 

Read the instructions; if it contains Sodium Hydroxide (Lye, Caustic Soda) it will eat right through aluminum. From http://www.easyoff.us/faq.shtml :

The last time I cleaned mine on the 4Runner I royally screwed them up.
I soaked them in something called purple power and the next day they were all pitted looking and brittle.

I found another upper and lower on CL thankfully.

This last month when I rebuilt my roommates 22re I simply took them to the machine shop and they soaked them in their hot tank.
I dropped them off when I picked up the head and came back later to get them.
They looked like they came new from Toyota and they didn't charge me anything either!

 

I believe I found my culprit. I found a KnN filter sticker under my hood and my filter box is all oily. Im gonna take them off and try our kuda parts washer at work. If that don't work I will have to take it to the machine shop. Now when I have the intake off I am suspecting to find my intake ports in the same shape. Other than pulling the head how can I clean the ports.

 

Yes. If your plenum is all nasty behind the TB then your lower intake is going to look the same way.

I cant see cleaning it without removing it also.
It will be next to impossible to keep the crub, solvents, broken bristles, pieces of scotchbrite or whatever from going in to the motor.

I say either live with it or remove it.


Your K&N filter HAS probably clogged up your airflow meter. Get some MAF cleaner and spray the meter wit it. Do NOT use carb cleaner or any thing like that.
It is not uncommon for the MAF to get wonky after a K&N install. Especially if you spay 1 gallon of oil on the filter and then put it in the air box.

I'm sure my veezy intake was gummed up mostly because of the EGR, I had a coating of like 1/2" on all the interior surfaces of the upper plenum!

two cans of carb cleaner and a bunch of shop rags later, all clean....
