85 Long block with 84 accesories

Hey y'all,
New to the forum and my yota. Just picked up an 84 4Runner with a blown motor for cheap. As I was looking into replacing the motor, it seems the newer, 85-up long blocks are more abundant and cheaper. I was wondering if I could use these with my intake manifold and aftermarket headers. My worries are the timing cover, which I'm gathering i will need to buy separately, and the fuel pump since mine is mechanical for the carb. Are the any other issues i need to know about? Will everything else bolt right up? The motor I have has an aftermarket cam so i was going to swap that over too.
Thanks!
Scott

the 84 block is 2mm higher with doughnut pistons. and a dual row timing chain. the 84 head has dished combustion chambers for the pistons and non pear exhaust ports.

although , they will "bolt up" and machining the t/c cover is no problem , you will never find a chain to fit

I'm looking at swapping in a long block. That being a new post 85 head and block. Timing chain shouldnt be an issue. What worries me is whether the intake, header, fuel pump and cam shaft will fit and function coming off and 84 block....

Would hinder the intake manifold from bolting up? Rockauto lists the same part number for the 84 and 85 intake manifold gasket.

there listing is wrong , they are not the same .
toyota #'s
83- 8407 17177-35021
8408-8902 17177-35030

If my memory serves me , the bolt patern is completly different , and the center water outlet is also different

exhaust ports on the manifold are also different , but the bolt pattern is the same , not sure how the exhaust would flow , but it will bolt up

I hate to be the one guy going against the grain but I did the exact opposite of what you propose. I dropped an 84 re into a 93' pickup and used all of the 93 accessories. That includes stock intake, stock exhaust, A/C, power steering, alternator. I even tossed on the 93 valve cover cuz I liked the look better. Literally the only '84 parts in the engine bay are the block, head, timing cover and internal parts.

There were two things I had to address in my install.
1.) the '85 and up motors have a boss for a knock sensor, you won't use it. I had to create a mount for my knock sensor.

2.) the exhaust bolt pattern is different. Going from a post '85 to a '84 required I drill one hole in my stock manifold. Since you'rs is aftermarket it may fit, that depends on the manufacturer. Take a look at the bottom of the header mounting plate, there will be one bolt/stud in the center, if there are two empty bolt holes about 1.5-2" on either side of the center, your header will at least bolt up. you need to determine if it will work for the different shape of the exhaust ports.

EFI 85- Thanks for the welcome! I have another friend in the area who has a 4Runner built a little more than mine, intent is to get my 4runner Rubicon ready.

Slacker- I think the difference in part number is bcause the intake is a 2 piece design on later models, that is if memory serves me right. I believe the mounting surface is the same.

Techno- Thanks, sounds like what I'm trying to do will work. I talked to the company who sells the long block and he pretty much said the same thing as you. Should have the long block w/new timing cover and water pump here in a couple days!

THanks to all for your help! Lookin forward to spending a lot more time on these forums.
