Hi, I just joined the Yota family, last night I purchased an 85 pickup with 183k-ish miles, 4WD, roll bar, 22R engine, lifted an unknown amount and sitting on 33"s.


It wasn't starting so the guy took it to a shop where they decided to remove the distributor, and then no one felt like making sure every thing was aligned properly to be sure the timing was right so he sold it to me for $500. I towed it home and started poking around, rotated the engine by hand to TDC using the screwdriver in the #1 socket method, set the dizzy to 12'o-clock, cranked it, and nothing, it sounds like it's turning over slowly. Tried squirting some ether in the airfilter and still nothing, pulled out the spark plugs and they looked liked carp so I got new ones, while I was at it got a new dizzy cap, rotor, and spark plug leads, put all that on, still nothing. So I'm not sure if I botched the timing or if the starter is just tired, or the battery is weak, or what

This is the first carbureted engine I've ever had any dealings with, so I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. I'll be asking mr Google in the meantime.

after you find tdc on #1 cyl. you can confirm timing by pulling dist cap and verify rotor button is pointing at # 1 spark plug wire. then check for spark with an old plug laying in valve cover/ somewhere grounded that you can see from inside the truck. looks like a good buy...

I read somewhere that at cyl #1 TDC the dizzy should be at 12'o-clock, is this incorrect?, it makes more sense for it to be at the #1 contact, but that's just what I read.

Hmm, was my thread title not good enough?, I don't think that was what I called it. I wasn't trying to be one of those people that signs up and immediately posts a thread full of questions that have already been answered 100 times (I've been on bimmerfest long enough to know that crap's annoying) I just wanted to introduce myself and my truck and figured that running condition was pertinent to it's description.

 

What BMW you got? Several of us on here with them. Lots of threads on timing issues and what not on here. Loads of info on it really.

 

I've got a 93 325IS, I'm about to stroke the engine to 3.0 liters using parts from an E46 330I, which is the main reason I wanted a second vehicle, it ended up being this Yota because I've been wanting a truck to cut firewood and this was cheap.

And yeah, been reading a lot on timing, but I think now my biggest issue is a flat battery so I'll take it to Advance in the morning for a charge and see what I can do from there.

And I've already started searching for a Jetta TDI engine because I hear they'll fit sort of painlessly and that seams easier than finding one of the 12 diesel engines Toyota accidentally sent state side.

 

Okay, I've been tinkering with the Yota and replaced spark plugs, plug leads, distributor cap, rotor button, and ignition coil. When I rotate the engine by hand with the dizzy cap off I can see the rotor turning, and I have checked voltage at the plug for coil and I have 12V, but I'm not getting any spark, even with a new plug connected directly to the negative terminal of the battery via a jumper cable.

Does any one have any idea what could be going on here?.

 

Bad igniter?
No power to igniter?
No sense from distributor to igniter?

 

I believe that what I was calling an ignition coil is what you called an igniter, and it's brand new as of yesterday, and there is power to it.
Is there a way to bench test the pulse generator?, or should I just assume it's bad since it's basically all that's left?.

 

Pics of what you are referring to would be helpful. We may have a terminology issue here...

The ignitor sits under the coil pack. The pick-up coil sits in the distributor(Hall effect style, I believe)
