Guys,

I just put a SR5 cluster in my 1988 2WD DLX from a 1984 4x4. Everything works good after I recalibrated the tech, But I notice that when I reverse the speedometer responds by going backwards. Going forward it works ok and I calibrated it with my GPS. Is this normal. My base cluster didn't move while backing up. Thanks for any advice.

I think thats normal if it doesnt have the little peg/needle rest.

I rarely backup cause I am always moving forward, so I dont know if mine does that or not...

 

Thats wierd. I have a 85 sr5 4x4 cluster and the tachometer doesnt work. Does anyone know if its the cluster it self or the wiring?

 

Stafford92, is the cluster in the original truck ? If it is a cluster from another your truck may not be wired for a tach, but that is easy to fix if it is the case. Appreciate the responses guys.

Im not for sure on that one. I believe its the original cluster. its an sr5 model and has the sr5 cluster. Although i could be wrong. The temp gauge is stuck on hot and the oil pressure gauges reads, but seems to be reading down a notch. i have put in a mechanical water temp gauge and considering doing the same for tach and oil press. But i wold really just like to get my stock cluster working as well.

 

My truck had been rebuilt at some point in time, and someone hooked up the oil pressure gauge to an idiot light sensor. So it burnt the gauge in the cluster up. I replaced the idiot light sender with an aftermarket gauge and sender and finally I know my engine has 60psi at highway speeds, 20psi at idle.

I did have to retap my block to 1/8"NPT threads, because almost all aftermarket gauges are 1/8" NPT. And I couldnt find a thread adapter in my small town...

So its possible that your stuff isnt hooked up properly. The temp gauge being pegged would lead me to think its plugged into the light sensor possibly.

 

well i'll have to do some playin around with it i suppose. i'll post what i find

 

A tip about the oil pressure gauge tat I found out last week. I hooked mine up with the idiot light sender connected and the gauge went full scale for a minute and then fell off. I then unhooked the wire at the sender and figured that it was shot. A couple days later I hooked the wire back up and turn the key on and the needle began to drive up, so I shut it off and bought a gauge style sender and all is well now. So if you didn't leave it on too long or maybe there is some sort of internal overload that resets ????? Or maybe I just got lucky ?? Hopefully someone else can use this info though.
