Save me from a McGyver ground wire

I have a 93 yota V6 4x pickup. (not SR5). Recently, my oil pressure guage on the dash stopped picking up my oil pressure sending unit.
The wire that clips to the sending unit is good. The new sending unit is good. And the gauge on the instrument panel is good.
My only theory was "bad ground". I then clipped a temporary ground wire to the engine and touched it to my sending unit. The darn thing worked. Even the old sending unit worked.
Why in the hell is the sending unit not grounding itself anymore? I cleaned the threads where the sender screws into with no results. Theres only one wire to the sending unit. So I assurme it grounds itself.
I really dont whant to McGyver something.
Does anyone have any ideas. Please!!!!

Your engine is not grounding as well as it used to.

check your grounds at your battery, battery to body sheet metal and sheet metal to engine metal

McGyver would have it fixed and not need to post on the Internet.

Is there Teflon tape on the threads of the sending unit?

Thanks 93toyrunner2.. I overlooked his posting of the 3.0, but glad you posted the link to it. I will add it to my 88 build thread for a quick reference. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone. I new that using "MacGyver" in my post would attract some good help.

I think that the ground between the engine and fire wall is my best bet. A few months ago, I had a coolant hose spring a leak in the same area.

Ditto to all the above about grounds. In addition, due to age & corrosion, you should probably remove, clean & re-install ALL major grounds. You should have seen the plug-in connectors on my taillights last time I had them out...they were GREEN/BLUE with crud.
